Wildcats Suffer Non-League Loss At Saint Rose

AMHERST, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose women's volleyball team ran its winning streak to three-straight matches following a 3-1 victory over Daemen University in a non-conference match this evening at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium on the CSR campus.

Daemen, a member of the East Coast Conference, suffered its second-straight loss and dropped to 13-5 on the year. Saint Rose of the Northeast-10 Conference improved to 13-11.


IMPACT PLAYERS

  • Outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) reached double digits in kills for the fourth-straight match and the 10th time this season. The senior posted a team-high 43 attacks and registered 14 kills. She also contributed six digs and four blocks.
  • Graduate student Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) finished with a double-double, as she totaled 10 kills and 10 digs.
  • Junior setter Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) posted 32 assists and a team-high four service aces. 
  • Sophomore middle hitter Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) added six kills and four blocks, while senior defensive specialist Mickaley Monahan (Saline, Mich.) totaled a team-high 11 digs.
  • The host Golden Knights were led by freshman Teresa Moulder's 12 kills, while senior Jessica Vargas added 10 kills, nine digs and three aces. Senior Valeria Jorge nearly registered a triple-double, as she recorded 31 assists, 13 digs and seven blocks.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Daemen equaled its season-high for attacked errors (30) and posted a season-low .098 hitting percentage.
  • Saint Rose recorded 13 service aces, the most allowed by Daemen all season.
  • The Golden Knights also registered 29 blocks, the most a team has recorded against the Wildcats this season.
  • Daemen held a 7-6 lead in set one, before the hosts put together an 8-2 run to take a 14-9 lead. Daemen used a late 6-3 rally to pull within two points (20-18), but the host closed out set with five unanswered points—four of which came as the result of Daemen errors.
  • Daemen held an 11-7 lead in set two, but the Golden Knights scored 11 of the next 14 points and took an 18-14 lead following an ace by Vargas. Daemen scored the next four points to tie it at 18-18, but Saint Rose closed out the set with a 7-2 run.
  • Saint Rose appeared ready to pull off the sweep when they opened an early 9-3 lead in set three, but Daemen responded with a 15-2 run for an 18-11 lead. Saint Rose would come no closer than four points down the stretch.
  • Both teams made early runs in set four and the hosts held a 9-7 lead when they put together a 5-1 spurt for a 14-8 lead. Daemen rallied with a 5-2 run of its own to cut the lead to three (16-13). The Saint Rose lead was four points, 20-16, when a kill by Alessi sparked the Wildcats on a 5-1 run that knotted the set at 21-21. Saint Rose denied Daemen the comeback and scored three of the next four points en route to the 25-23 victory.

GAME NOTES

  • It marks the first time that Daemen has suffered back-to-back losses since losing to New Haven and American International during opening day action of the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks Tournament on Sept. 17, 2021.
  • Daemen is now 4-2 against Northeast-10 teams this season.
  • St. Rose posted its first-ever victory over Daemen. The Wildcats had prevailed in each of the previous five meetings between the two programs.
