Wildcats Fall To Regionally-Ranked Golden Knights

ERIE, Pa. - Gannon University got goals from five different players en route to a 5-1 victory over Daemen University in NCAA Division II men's soccer action this evening at McConnell Family Stadium on the Gannon campus.

Daemen saw its three game unbeaten streak come to an end and dropped to 4-4-2 on the year. Gannon, which is ranked sixth in the Atlantic Region by the United Soccer Coaches, ran its winning streak to six-straight games and improved to 9-2-1.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Gannon, which entered the game ranked second nationally in goals per game (3.82), struck for two goals less than 10 minutes into the game.
  • Redshirt freshman Pau Ferrer headed home a corner kick by freshman Sverre Orten at the 8:08 of the first half, and the Golden Knights scored again at 9:02 when Orten netted his fourth of the year off a pass from sophomore Herman Aanberg.
  • The Golden Knights increased their lead to 4-0 with two goals in the span of seven minutes late in the first half. Herman scored at 28:36 when his shot deflected off a Daemen defender and past goaltender Marcos Lerma Escobar (Zaragoza, Spain), and senior Tinashe Katsande scored at 35:17.
  • Daemen got on the scoreboard with five minutes left in the first half. Graduate student Carlos España (Madrid, Spain) sent a lead pass to senior Derek Bartlo (Williamsville, N.Y.) on the right flank and Bartlo blasted a shot home from 15 yards out.
  • Daemen nearly cut the lead to 4-2 midway through the second half, but a header by junior Alexander Khademi (Stockholm, Sweden) off corner kick by España went off the cross bar and the rebound was cleared away.
  • Gannon closed out the scoring following a goal by junior Benjamin Querling with nine minutes to play.
  • The Golden Knights posted a 28-7 advantage in total shots and a 15-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • Lerma Escobar, the reining ECC Defensive Player of the Week, turned away a season-high 10 shots for the Wildcats. Freshman Sam Alarcon was credited with one save for the Golden Knights.

GAME NOTES

  • Tonight's game marked the ninth all-time meeting between the Wildcats and the Golden Knights. Gannon has now prevailed in the last four meetings and owns a 7-2-0 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Daemen entered the game ranked first among East Coast Conference teams in fewest goals allowed and had limited eight of its first nine opponents to one goal or less.
  • Bartlo, the reining ECC Offensive Player of the Week, has now played a role in each of Daemen's last four goals and leads the team in goals (4), assists (3) and points (11).
