Balanced Attack Leads Wildcats Past Alliance, 76-65

MacDonald Scores A Team-High 15 Points; Hemphill Records First Career Double-Double

AMHERST, N.Y. – Junior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) registered his first career double-double and senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) scored a team-high 15 points to lead Daemen University to a 76-65 victory over Alliance University today in non-conference men's basketball action at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus. Daemen of the East Coast Conference snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 3-2 on the year. AU, formerly known as Nyack College, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). AU dropped to 4-3 following its second-straight setback.

Daemen entered the game ranked fourth in the East Region by the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA).

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • MacDonald, who entered the game averaging a team-high 16.8 points, connected on 7-of-14 shots and also totaled six rebounds and three steals.
  • Hemphill, who logged a career-high 23 minutes off the bench, connected on 6-of-11 shots and totaled a career-high 13 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Five of his rebounds were offensive. He also contributed two assists.
  • Junior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) helped the Wildcats get off to a hot start, as he drilled four three-pointers in the first half and finished with 12 points and two helpers.
  • Redshirt senior Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) went 10-of-12 from the charity stripe and finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
  • Senior Ryan Salzberg (Manlius, N.Y.) added seven points and a team-high five assists.
  • Junior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) played a season-high 24 minutes and scored a season-high nine points.
  • Alliance was led by senior guard Tavien Kemp (Olean, N.Y) who totaled 16 points and seven rebounds. Senior swingman Isayas Aris, who entered the game averaging 20.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game, failed to score in double figures for the first time this season and finished with six points and 11 rebounds. 
GAME NOTES
  • Today's game marked the seventh all-time meeting between the two teams. Daemen has prevailed in the last six meetings and owns a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Since gaining full NCAA Division II status in 2015-16, Daemen is 17-1 against CACC teams. The Wildcats have won their last 16 games against CACC opponents overall, and have now won 12-straight home games against CACC opponents. 
  • Daemen opened the game with a three-pointer by freshman Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) and later took a 16-8 lead following a triple by Mason with 14:40 left in the half.
  • Alliance quickly cut the lead to 16-13, but Daemen responded with an 18-8 run and took a 34-21 lead following a layup by MacDonald with 7:43 left in the frame.
  • Back-to-back buckets by Hemphill gave Daemen a 40-26 lead, but Alliance outscored the Wildcats 6-3 over the final 3:29 of the half and Daemen took a 43-32 lead into intermission.
  • Daemen made just one of its first seven shots at the start of the second half and Alliance took advantage with a 13-4 run. A three-pointer by senior Jordan Rodriguez capped the run and cut the Daemen lead to two points, 47-45.
  • Alliance went scoreless for the next four minutes, which allowed Daemen to regain a double-digit lead, 55-45.
  • The Daemen lead was down to five points, 57-52, when the hosts got a layup from Hemphill and back-to-back three-pointers by Fasoyiro and MacDonald to take a 65-52 lead with just under seven minutes to play.
  • Alliance cut the lead to nine points twice over the final six minutes, but the visitors would come no closer.
  • Daemen shot 53-percent (16-for-30) in the first half and finished 43-percent (26-for-60) from the field overall. The Wildcats made six three-pointers in the first half and went 9-of-21 from downtown overall. The hosts made 15-of-19 free throws.
  • Alliance shot 38-percent (11-for-29) in the first half and finished 24-of-58 (41%) from the field overall. The visitors went 7-of-24 from downtown and canned 10-of-16 free throws.
  • Daemen posted a 39-34 edge in total rebounds and grabbed a season-high 14 offensive rebounds, which led to a 13-10 advantage in second chance points. Daemen also finished with a 25-19 edge in points off turnovers.

Daemen returns to Lumsden Gymnasium next weekend when it opens ECC play by hosting Molloy (Dec. 2) and Queens (Dec. 4).
