Wildcats Open Conference Play With 72-69 Loss To Molloy

AMHERST, N.Y. – Sophomore Darren Fergus scored all of his game-high 21 points in the second half to spark Molloy University to a 72-69 victory over Daemen University this evening in men's basketball action at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus. It marked the East Coast Conference opener for both teams. Daemen fell to 3-3 on the year, while Molloy picked up its first win (1-7).

Daemen entered the game ranked fifth in the East Region by the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA).

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Fergus, who entered the game averaging a league-high 18.3 points per game, connected on 8-of-11 shots in the second half and also contributed seven rebounds and seven assists. Classmate Kenny Lazo added 11 points and four assists for the Lions.
  • Four players scored in double figures for the host Wildcats.
  • Junior transfer Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) turned in his strongest effort of the season and finished with a season-high 15 points and a season-high nine rebounds.
  • Redshirt senior Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) also scored 15 points and registered a season-high nine rebounds and a season-high four blocks.
  • Senior Ryan Salzberg (Manlius, N.Y.) scored a season-high 14 points, while classmate Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) chipped in 10 points.
  • Junior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) added six points, eight rebounds and four steals for the hosts.
GAME NOTES
  • Tonight's game marked Daemen's 200th as a NCAA Division II member. Since Daemen gained full NCAA status prior to the 2015-16 season, the Wildcats have posted a 141-59 record for a .705 winning percentage. Daemen is 99-33 (.750) against ECC teams since the 2015-16 season.
  • Daemen will play six of its first seven games at Lumsden Gymnasium. The Wildcats are 83-17 (.830) at home during Daemen's NCAA Division II era (2015-present). Daemen is now 6-3 at home all-time against Molloy.
  • Tonight's game marked the 19th all-time meeting between the two teams. Daemen has prevailed in five of the last seven meetings and owns a 12-7 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Daemen outscored the Lions 43-31 in the first half, while Molloy posted a 41-26 edge in the second half.
  • The teams traded baskets early on and Daemen held a 6-5 lead when MacDonald hit a three-pointer and was fouled. He converted the four-point play and then MacDonald later gave the hosts a 12-5 lead with 15:46 left in the half.
  • The hosts would take a 22-10 lead following a driving layup by redshirt sophomore Tyler Hind (Randolph, N,Y.) nine minutes into the first half and the Daemen lead was 13 points, 28-15, when Molloy got back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to seven.
  • Molloy later cut the Daemen lead to five, 34-29, following a triple by Lazo with 4:06 left in the half, but Daemen responded with nine unanswered points and the hosts took their largest lead of the half, 43-29, following a putback by Hemphill with 23 seconds left in the frame. The Wildcats took a 43-31 lead into the break.
  • Daemen connected on just five of its first 15 shots of the second half and Molloy took advantage with an 18-11 run. Two free throws by Fergus with just over 12 minutes left capped the run and cut the Daemen lead to five points, 54-49.
  • Daemen later regained a nine point advantage, 62-53, after MacDonald canned two free throws with 7:37 left, but Molloy put together a 13-3 run over the next five minutes and took a 66-65 lead after sophomore Billy Reyes drained his third three-pointer of the game with 2:43 remaining
  • Daemen answered with back-to-back layups by Fasoyiro and Atkins to regian a 69-66 lead, but a conventional three-point play by Fergus with 1:11 left tied the game.
  • Daemen came up empty on its next possession and Fergus made one of two free throws with 42 seconds left. Daemen once again came up empty and Lazo drained two free throws with 16 second left to make if a three-point game 72-69.
  • Daemen missed a three-pointer with nine seconds left, but got the offensive rebound and called a timeout. The Wildcats never got a shot off on their last possession.
  • Daemen shot just 22-percent (8-for-36) overall and was 0-for-11 from behind the arc in the second half. The hosts finished 26-of-74 (35%) from the field overall and 3-of-21 from downtown. Daemen made 14-of-18 from the free throw line.
  • Molloy, which entered the game shooting just 40-percent from the field over their firtst seven games, shot a blistering 57-percent (15-for-26) from the field in the second half and went 26-of-53 (49%) from the field overall. Molloy 9-of-18 three-pointers and made 11-of-17 from the charity stripe.
  • Molloy committed 19 turnovers, which Daemen converted into a 27-6 edge in points off turnovers. The hosts also posted a 44-39 edge in total rebounds and a 19-7 edge in offensive boards—which led to a 17-7 edge in second chance points. Daemen also finished with a 38-34 advantage in points in the paint.

Daemen returns to Lumsden Gymnasium Sunday (Dec. 4) when it hosts Queens College in an ECC contest.
