Back To Back: Wildcats Complete Second Straight Unbeaten Conference Season

Daemen survives scare at Mercy, wins in five-set thriller

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - With a wild 3-2 victory (23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 24-26, 15-12) over host Mercy College this afternoon, the Daemen University women's volleyball team has completed its second consecutive unbeaten run through East Coast Conference play. Veteran outside hitters Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) and Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) combined for 30 kills and 34 digs to lead the way.

The Wildcats, who had already locked up the ECC regular season title heading into today's match, ran their conference winning streak to 23 straight matches and improved to 17-5 overall (10-0 in conference). Daemen hasn't lost a regular season conference match since Nov. 10, 2019.

Mercy dropped to 12-6 overall and 5-4 in conference play. The Mavericks have already clinched a berth in the upcoming ECC Tournament which will take place Nov. 11-12 at Daemen's Lumsden Gymnasium.

Both teams entered today's match ranked among the best teams in the East Region. Daemen is No. 3 and Mercy is No. 10 in the official NCAA Division II regional rankings which were published earlier this week.

IMPACT PLAYERS

  • Burns posted double figure kills for the sixth straight match, finishing with a match-high 17 while attacking at a .275 clip. She added a career-high 19 digs to record her eighth double-double of the season.

  • Logan played a strong supporting role, finishing with 13 kills and 15 digs - her 10th double-double of the season and the 26th of her career.

  • Junior setter Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) also doubled up for the Wildcats (her fifth double-double of the season), finishing with 39 assists and 10 digs.

  • Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.), the reigning ECC Libero of the Year,  returned after missing the last three matches with an injury and contributed a match-high 24 digs to the Wildcat cause. It marked her fourth match with at least 20 digs this season and matched her best total of the campaign which came against American International College in early September.

  • Daemen also got contributions from middle blockers Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) and Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) who chipped in eight and seven kills, respectively.

  • Larissa Schneid paced the Mavericks, finishing with 14 kills and 21 digs.

  • Anyelainy Vizcaino Araujo (10 kills, 10 digs) and Nilka River Maldonado (10 kills, 13 digs) also posted double-doubles for Mercy, while setter Yarianne Gonzalez recorded a match-high 41 assists.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Mercy finished with an advantage in total kills (55-52), but Daemen was the more efficient team. The Wildcats finished with a .194 hitting percentage (Mercy .101) and committed just 18 hitting errors compared to Mercy's 35.

  • Daemen finished with an 11-8 advantage in service aces. It marks the sixth time this season the Wildcats have posted 10 or more service aces in a match.

GAME NOTES

  • Daemen improved to 15-3 in the all-time series with the Mavericks. The Wildcats have won four straight and 13 of the last 14 meetings.

  • Daemen improved to 1-1 in five-set matches this season. American International - the No. 1 ranked team in the East Region - is the only other team to go the distance with the Wildcats this season.

  • It also marked the first time Daemen has been pushed to five sets in an ECC regular season contest since their last conference loss.

  • The Wildcats finish the conference season with a 30-6 mark in sets. Daemen is 66-8 in sets during ECC matches in the last two seasons.

NEXT UP
The Wildcats conclude the regular season with a non-conference match against the University of Bridgeport, a former ECC rival, Sunday afternoon in Connecticut. Daemen has won four straight in the series with the Purple Knights, including a 3-0 victory at the East Region Clash earlier this season.
