Wildcats Run Past Mavericks For First League Win

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Junior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) scored 19 points and classmate Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) added 18 to lead Daemen University to an 86-62 victory over Mercy College this afternoon in men's basketball action at Victory Gymnasium on the Mercy campus. The Wildcats snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the East Coast Conference. Mercy suffered its fourth-straight setback and fell to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Daemen improved to 19-0 all-time against Mercy since joining the ECC in 2013-14.

Daemen entered today's game tied for ninth in the latest NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region poll.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Mason, who tied the program's NCAA-era (2015-present) record for three-pointers in a game (7) during a 72-70 loss at St. Thomas Aquinas Friday night, went 4-for-7 from three-point land today and finished with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists.
  • Fasoyiro continued his solid play of late. He scored a team-high 13 points in the first half and finished with a season-high 18 points, eight rebounds, a season-high five assists and a season-high four steals. He has now scored in double figures in three of the last four games.
  • Freshman Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) played 25 minutes off the bench and equaled his season-high for points with 15.
  • Redshirt senior Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) added 10 points and five assists, while junior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) chipped in nine points, six rebounds and five assists.
  • Graduate student Sean Smith, Sr. paced the Mavericks with 17 points and seven rebounds.
GAME NOTES
  • Mercy held an 18-9 lead seven minutes into the game, but the Wildcats outscored the Mavericks 17-6 over the next five minutes and the visitors took a 26-24 lead after Glover drilled a three-pointer with 7:22 left in the half.
  • Mercy held a 30-29 lead with five minutes left before the break, but the Wildcats outscored the hosts 15-0 the rest of the frame and Daemen took a 44-30 lead into intermission. Fasoyiro scored seven of the 15 points and drilled a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer.
  • The Daemen lead was 12 points, 51-38, four minutes into the second half when the Wildcats put together a decisive 12-0 spurt to take a 63-39 lead with 12 minutes to play.
  • Mercy came no closer than 22 points the rest of the way.
  • Daemen established season highs for points (86), field goals (33) and three-pointers (12) in a game.
  • Daemen shot a 51-percent (33-for-65) from the field overall and made 12-of-29 three-pointers. The Wildcats finished 8-of-13 from the free throw line.
  • Mercy shot 46-percent (26-for-56) from the field overall and went 6-of-23 from downtown. The Mavericks attempted just eight free throws and made four.
NEXT JUMP BALL
Daemen returns to action Wednesday (Dec. 14) when it hosts Clarion University of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in a non-league game. The game was originally scheduled to be played Nov. 19 but was postponed due to the winter storm that hit the Western New York region that weekend.
