Setters Hold Off Wildcats In A Battle Of Regionally-Ranked Teams

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Seniors Brandon and Bryan Powell combined for 34 points and 13 rebounds to lift the Pace University men's basketball team to a 66-60 victory over Daemen University this evening in non-conference action at the Goldstein Recreation Center on the Pace campus. Pace, a member of the Northeast-10 Conference, ran its winning streak to four-straight games and improved to 10-3. Daemen saw its two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 5-6.
 
Both teams entered tonight's game ranked in the latest NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region poll. Pace is ranked sixth, while Daemen is ranked 10th.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Brandon Powell, a 6-foor-3 guard, drilled four three-pointers and totaled 18 points, seven rebounds, a block and three steals. Bryan Powell, a 6-foot-6 forward, added 16 points and six boards.
  • Redshirt senior Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) led the Wildcats, as he connected on 6-of-8 shots and totaled 15 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
  • Senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) went 3-of-6 from downtown and finished with 15 points and three assists.
  • Senior Ryan Salzberg (Manlius, N.Y.) added eight points.
  • Junior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) played just 20 minutes after getting into early foul trouble, but still managed to contribute seven points, two blocks and a steal.
  • Junior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) played 20 minutes off the bench and added six points, six boards, two assists, two blocks and a steal.
GAME NOTES
  • Tonight's game marked just third all-time meeting between the Wildcats and the Setters. Daemen, which was making its first-ever appearance at Pace, now owns a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Pace held a 14-12 lead midway through the first half when the hosts put together a 10-6 run and took a 24-18 lead following a layup by Bryan Powell with 5:51 left in the half.
  • Daemen answered with a three-pointer by Salzberg and later cut the lead to a point, 24-23, after a jumper by Salzberg with 3:36 left before intermission.
  • Pace responded with back-to-back three-pointers and the hosts took a 30-24 lead into the break.
  • Pace opened the second half with seven unanswered points and took a 37-24 lead after Brandon Powell drilled a three-pointer three minutes into the second half.
  • The Pace lead was still double digits, 43-33, when a jumper by MacDonald sparked the Wildcats on a 13-2 run. A fast break dunk by Atkins capped the run and gave Daemen a 46-45 lead with 8:43 left.
  • Brandon Powell sparked a 13-5 run by the Setters with three long-range three-pointers and the hosts had a 58-51 lead with just over five minutes to play.
  • Daemen battled back yet again and eventually tied the game at 60-60 after Fasoyiro swished a corner three-pointer with 2:30 to play.
  • Neither team scored again until Brandon Powell made two free throws with 56 seconds left.
  • Daemen came up empty on its next two possessions and Bryan Powell went 2-of-4 from the charity stripe to give the hosts a 64-60 lead.
  • Atkins was fouled while grabbing the rebounding following a missed free throw by Powell, but Atkins was off the mark on the front end of a one-and-one at the other end and Brandon Powell was fouled after securing the rebound. He made both free throws with 11 seconds left to close out the scoring.
  • The Wildcats shot 52-percent (13-of-25) from the field in the second half and finished 22-of-52 (42%) from the field overall. Daemen made 7-of-19 from downtown and 9-of-14 from the charity stripe
  • Pace shot 49-percent (26-for-53) from the field overall and went 7-of-15 from downtown. The Setters canned 7-of-12 free throws.
  • Daemen finished with a 33-32 edge in total rebounds and the Wildcats also posted a 15-10 edge in second chance points. Pace finished with the advantage in points in the paint (38-26).
  • Six of Daemen's 11 games have been decided by six points or less and the Wildcats are just 1-5 in those games.
NEXT JUMP BALL
Daemen is idle until Dec. 30 when it hosts Cheyney University in a non-conference game.
