Daemen Student-Athletes Recognized With Major Conference Awards

Women's Basketball's Titus & Filbert, Men's Basketball's Sischo & Men's Track & Field's Matthews All Lauded

AMHERST, N.Y. - Four Daemen University student-athletes were among the recipients of major awards doled out by the East Coast Conference today. Senior women's basketball player Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) led the Daemen contingent as she was selected for three prestigious honors. Her teammate Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.), a redshirt senior, was honored for her perseverance through a major injury, while men's basketball standout Andrew Sischo (Guilderland, N.Y.) and men's track and field athlete Erik Matthews (Galway, N.Y.) each repeated as Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports.

Katie Titus concludes her Daemen career with three high profile honors, including the ECC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, becoming the first from Daemen to be so honored... Titus also repeats as the ECC Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year... the academic honors, which recognize her achievements on the basketball court and in the classroom, come on the heels of another astounding season for the four-year starter... Titus, who was named the ECC and East Region Player of the Year, averaged 20.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while leading the Wildcats to ECC regular season and tournament championships, as well as the program's second straight run to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16... in the classroom, Titus completed coursework and graduated from Daemen's Childhood/Special Education program this spring, graduating with a 3.90 cumulative GPA... today's academic honors are in addition to Titus' selections earlier this year for the CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-America teams.

Titus was additionally recognized as a co-recipient of the ECC Excellence in Community and Character Award, given to student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through positive actions and behaviors that are consistent with the NCAA Division II attributes of learning, service, passion, sportsmanship, balance and resourcefulness. In addition to serving as captain of her team this season, Titus has been active in a number of different activities, both on and off campus. She was a participant in DC Will Lead, a leadership development program offered exclusively to Daemen student-athletes, and served as a Team IMPACT fellow, assisting with Daemen's implementation and execution of a robust partnership that benefits area children facing chronic and life-threatening illnesses. 
   
FILBERT SMILLIE AWARD

JOHN SMILLIE, JR. AWARD
Tiara Filbert becomes the fifth Daemen student-athlete to earn the John Smillie, Jr. Award given annually to the individuals who overcome great personal or physical challenges and hardships to pursue their intercollegiate athletic careers... the award is named for former New York Tech athletic trainer John Smillie, Jr. who passed away in 2008 following a battle with cancer... Filbert suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the COVID-19-shortened 2020-21 season, limiting her to just eight games and forcing her to miss the team's run to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight... she progressed through injury rehabilitation and exercised an option to return for a fifth collegiate season, ultimately leading Daemen back to the Sweet 16 in 2022... Filbert was named to the All-ECC First Team, appearing and starting in all 27 games while averaging 11.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and a team-high 4.0 assists per game.

ECC MEN'S BASKETBALL SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
For the third consecutive year, Andrew Sischo has been named the ECC Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, recognizing his combined achievements in the classroom and on the basketball court... Sischo, who was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-America teams earlier this year, concluded a six-year career with the Wildcats and earned a Master of Business Administration degree in the process... a five-time All-ECC First Team and unprecedented four-time ECC Player of the Year, Sischo will undoubtedly go down as one of the all-time great college basketball players in Division II history... this past season, he became the all-time leading scorer and rebounder in ECC history, and he finished his career with more points (2,888) than any men's basketball player from a New York State NCAA program, regardless of division... Sischo averaged 22.9 points and led all of Division II in rebounds per game (13.0) and double-doubles (24) this past season.

ECC MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
For the second straight season, Erik Matthews has been named the ECC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, recognizing his combined achievements in athletics and academics... Matthews earned All-ECC honors in three events during the outdoor season... at the conference championship meet in early May, he placed first in the 400 meter hurdles (with a program record time of 56.08 seconds), second in the 110 meter hurdles (with a time of 16.31 seconds) and third in the long jump (with a leap of 6.25 meters)... Matthews was additionally named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team earlier this year, and twice in his career has been named the ECC Elite 19 Award recipient, given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA competing in a conference championship event.
