AMHERST, N.Y. – Nationally-ranked College of Saint Rose broke a 1-1 tie with a goal with just over 20 minutes to play and held on for a 2-1 victory over upset-minded Daemen University in non-conference women's soccer action today at Karrer Field.
It marked the 2022 season opener for both teams. Saint Rose, which returns eight starters from last year's team that advanced all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Division II Tournament, entered the 2022 season ranked
No. 2 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Division II preseason poll. The Golden Knights are a member of the Northeat-10 Conference. Daemen is a member of the East Coast Conference and was picked third in the ECC preseason poll.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The teams entered halftime knotted at 1-1 following an evenly played first half. The visiting Golden Knights opened the scoring in the 16th minute when graduate student Krysten McGuffey banged home the rebound of her own shot.
- The Wildcats evened the score 10 minutes later when their Grand Island connection teamed up for a goal. Junior forward Brooke Amato (Grand Island, N.Y.) collected a loose ball in the St. Rose box following a corner kick by graduate student Grace Stranahan (Grand, N.Y.) and Amato one timed a low shot past CSR netminder Pia Bozic.
- St. Rose held a slim 11-6 edge in shots following the first 45 minutes.
- Saint Rose scored what would turn out to be the game winner off a free kick following a Daemen penalty deep in the Daemen defensive end. Senior back Sanna Rein took the free kick, which forced Daemen netminder Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) to make a nice diving save. The rebound went right to the feet of senior midfield Caylee Boorse and she one timed a shot into the lower left corner.
- Daemen had a couple solid chances to even the score over the final 20 minutes, but Bozic came up with saves on shots by Stranahan in the 73rd minute and sophomore forward Alyssa Diaz (Rochester, N.Y.) in the 82nd minute.
- Saint Rose posted a 10-3 edge in shots in the second half and finished with a 21-9 advantage in shots overall (10-6 in shots on goal).
- DeLappi finished with eight saves, while Bozic, a transfer from Arizona State, stopped five shots in her CSR debut.
