Volleyball Sweeps Saturday In East Region Clash

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- After splitting the day on Friday with a win against Saint Anselm and a loss to American International, Daemen University women's volleyball swept Saturday's matches in the final day of the East Region Clash presented by the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. 

Friday night's five-set thrilling loss to AIC had no effect on the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon, as Daemen cruised to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-17) sweep over former East Coast Conference foe Bridgeport in the first match of the day. Daemen topped Bridgeport in every statistic, out-killing the Purple Knights 38 to 29, totaling 95 assists to 93 for Bridgeport, and finishing with a .263 hitting percentage compared to the Purple Knight's .172. With the win, Daemen moved to 4-2 on the season, Bridgeport drops to 1-7.

In the second game of the day and the final match of the East Region Clash, Daemen continued their sweeping ways with a perfect 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-18) over Bentley to round out their time in the tournament with a 3-1 record. In a game of runs between both teams, Wildcats went on five separate runs of four or more unanswered points throughout the three sets. Daemen out-killed Bentley 42 to 30 in the win. The Wildcats move to 5-2 on the season. Bentley moves to 8-4.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • The Wildcats finished Saturday's matches with 80 kills, averaging 13.33 kills per set on the day.
  • Senior outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, K.Y.) totaled 10 kills and 10 digs against Bentley for a double-double. 
  • Juniors Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) and Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) split the setting duties on the day. Masic took over setting duties against Bridgeport, finishing the match with a double-double as she tallied 20 assists and 10 digs. Alessi was Daemen's setter in the second match of the day against Bentley, finishing with 17 assists. She added six kills and an error for a hitting percentage of .217 against the Falcons. 
  • Junior middle blocker Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) finished with a team-high hitting percentage vs. Bentley, hitting .600 on seven kills and just one error. 
  • Senior outside hitter Jordan Martin (Fort Wayne, Ind.) totaled nine kills with a hitting percentage of .208 in the first match of the day against Bridgeport.
  • Sophomore right side Kate Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) earned a team-high hitting percentage (.429) slamming seven kills with just one error vs. Bridgeport
  • Freshman outside hitter Nahirka Malpica (Caguas, P.R.) played in her second match of the season and averaged 3 kills per set for a total of nine kills against the Purple Eagles. 
  • Sophomore middle hitter Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) played in both matches today, finishing with seven total kills.
  • Senior Shelby Kersten (Alden, N.Y.) played in all three sets against Bridgeport, totaling six kills for a hitting percentage of .364. She added two solo blocks and two assisted blocks in the match.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE VS. BRIDGEPORT
  • In a back-and-forth first set, the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run late that lifted Daemen. A 4-0 Purple Knights run tied the game, but Martin won the final two points of the set with a kill and an ace to seal the deal. 
  • The Wildcats out-killed the Purple Knights 38-29, with Daemen finishing with a .263 hitting percentage compared to just .172 for Bridgeport.
  • Martin and Malpica both earned a season-high nine kills in the match.
  • Kersten led the team up front with two solo blocks and two assisted blocks.
  • Ryan led the Wildcats in hitting percentage (.429) with seven kills and one error.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE VS. BENTLEY
  • Daemen out-killed Bentley 42-30, with the Wildcats notching 14 kills in each of the three sets.
  • The first set was a game of runs. The Wildcats went on a 7-1 run in the middle of the set, but then the Falcons responded with an 8-3 run of their own. After trading points late, Daemen went on their final run of the set, 4-0, to close it out. 
  • In the second set, the Wildcats opened the game up with five unanswered points. 
  • Burns and graduate student outside hitter Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) led the way offensively for the Wildcats, combining for 18 kills. 
  • Kuliga finished with an impressive .600 hitting percentage, knocking down seven kills on ten attempts with just one error.
  • Senior defensive specialist Mickaley Monahan (Saline, Mich.) was steady at the service line, serving 17 total times during the course of the three sets with an ace and just one service error.

UP NEXT
The Wildcats travel to West Virginia this weekend. Daemen will face Fairmont State on Friday (Sept. 16) at 5 p.m., and on Saturday (Sept. 17) will play at West Liberty at 2 p.m..
