AMHERST, N.Y. – Junior forward Olivia Gotobed scored twice to lead Saint Anselm College to a 3-1 victory over Daemen University today at rain-soaked Karrer Field. The visiting Hawks remained unbeaten on the year and improved to 4-0-0. Daemen, which was playing its fourth game in nine days, dropped to 0-3-1.
It marked the third-straight game in which Daemen has out shot its opponent by a wide margin, but has not been able to turn those shots into goals. The Wildcats out shot the Hawks 17-7 today and have outshot their last three opponents by a combined 51-16 margin. Daemen is 0-2-1 in those three games and has scored just one goal.
Tuesday's matchup was just the second all-time meeting between Daemen and Saint Anselm. The Hawks also posted a 3-1 victory in the first ever meeting last year in Manchester, N.H. Saint Anselm is a member of the Northeast 10 Conference, and is the fourth-straight NE10 team the Wildcats have faced so far this year.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The game saw limited action for first 30 minutes as the teams adjusted to the wet field.
- The visiting Hawks struck first after a Daemen foul gave Saint Anselm a free kick from 30 yards outside of the Daemen net. Senior midfielder Kathryn White took the free kick sent a perfect shot over Daemen net minder Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) in the 32nd minute.
- The Hawks doubled their lead less than a minute later when the visitors were awarded a penalty kick after DeLappi fouled a Saint Anselm player in the box. Gotobed converted the penalty kick into the lower right of the Daemen net.
- Daemen pressured the Saint Anselm zone the remainder of the half and registered four shots in the final 11 minutes, but the hosts could not break through.
- Daemen out shot the Hawks 5-0 early in the second half, but it was Saint Anselm that scored first in the second half. Gotobed collected a loose ball near midfield, dribbled into the Daemen zone and blasted a shot just under the Daemen crossbar from 25 yards out.
- Saint Anselm maintained the three goal advantage until the final five minutes, when the Wildcats scored off a free kick by junior midfielder Madita Zeitz (Malsch, Germany). The goal broke a streak of 325 scoreless minutes for the Wildcats.
- DeLappi played 66 minutes and totaled one save. Freshman Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) replaced DeLappi and played the final 24 minutes. It marked the collegiate debut for Schultz, who recorded one save.
- Freshman Emma Hudson went the distance in net for the Hawks and stopped five shots.
GAME NOTES
- Senior defender Julia Eichel (Grand Island, N.Y.) and freshman defender Nevada Hahn (Lancaster, N.Y.) played all 90 minus for the fourth-straight game.
- Freshman Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) registered a team-high four shots for the Wildcats.
