CO 32 38 70 Game Recap: Men's Basketball | 1/21/2023 6:59:00 PM | CONTACT: Tom McDermott, Director of Athletics Communications | tmcdermo@daemen.edu Late Run Lifts Wildcats Over Firebirds Fasoyiro Leads The Way With 23 Points As Daemen Extends Winning Streak To Seven WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) totaled 23 points and eight rebounds to lead the Daemen University men's basketball team to an 80-70 victory over the University of the District of Columbia this afternoon in East Coast Conference action at E.B Henderson Complex on the UDC campus. Daemen has now won seven straight--and nine of its last 10 games. The Wildcats improved to 12-6 overall and 5-3 in the league. The host Firebirds fell to 6-11 overall and 4-4 in the league. Daemen's seven-game winning streak ranks as the longest active streak among all NCAA Division II East Region teams. The Wildcats entered today's game ranked ninth in the latest NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region poll. IMPACT PLAYERS Fasoyiro connected on 10-of-12 shots and scored 14 of his 23 points in the second half. Junior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.), the reigning ECC Player of the Week, drilled four three-pointers and scored 14 points. Senior Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) the reigning ECC Defensive Player of the Week, stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. Senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) added 11 points and four assists, while classmate Ryan Salzberg (Manlius, N.Y.) played a team-high 36 minutes and chipped in six points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. scored seven points. Junior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) turned in another solid effort off the bench with eight points, five rebounds, four assists and a block in 18 minutes off the bench. Sophomore guard Michael Aiken netted 17 points for the Firebirds, while senior guard Jahmir Marable-Williams added 16 points and five helpers. GAME NOTES Daemen has now prevailed in the last 11 meetings between the two programs and the Wildcats now own a 16-2 advantage in the all-time series. The first six minutes of the game was back-and-forth and featured two ties and four lead changes. Daemen held a 12-11 lead when a three-pointer by Mason sparked the Wildcats on a 5-0 spurt that gave the Wildcats a 17-11 lead. UDC answered with a 14-7 run which gave the hosts a 25-24 lead, but Daemen regrouped and later took a 36-27 lead after Salzberg made two free throws with 2:28 left before halftime. Daemen would take a 41-32 lead into intermission. Daemen took its first double-digit lead of the game (47-36) following a layup by MacDonald four minutes into the second half, but the hosts would not go away and eventually cut the Daemen lead to four points, 49-45, following a layup by Aiken with just under 13 minutes left. The Daemen lead was five points, 58-53, when the Wildcats put together a decisive 13-3 run. A putback by Fasoyiro with 2:35 left capped the run and gave Daemen a 71-56 lead. UDC came no closer than 10 points the rest of the way. The Wildcats have limited 13 of their 18 opponents to 70 points or less this season. The Wildcats shot 57-percent (16-of-28) from the field in the second half and finished 30-of-54 (56%) from the field overall. Daemen made 5-of-22 three-point attempts and canned 15-of-23 free throws. UDC shot 44-percent (26-for-59) from the field overall and was 10-of-22 from downtown. It marked just the second time all season UDC has made 10 or more three-pointers in a game. The Firebirds made 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. Daemen finished with a 37-24 edge in total rebounds. The Firebirds finished with a 12-10 advantage in points off turnovers, while Daemen held the advantage in second chance points (13-3) and points in the paint (48-30).
