Balanced Attack Leads Wildcats To 82-72 Win Over Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. – All five starters scored in double figures to lead the Daemen University men's basketball team to an 82-72 win over Queens College this afternoon at Fitzgerald Gymnasium on the Queens campus.

Daemen, which had a seven-game winning streak snapped following a 71-62 loss at Molloy University Friday night, improved to 13-7 overall and 6-4 in the East Coast Conference. Queens saw its two-game winning streak come to an end and dropped to 7-13 overall and 4-6 in the league.

The Wildcats entered the game ranked eighth in the latest NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region poll.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) scored 11 points in the first half and finished with a team-high 18 points for Daemen. He connected on 3-of-7 three-pointers and also made 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.
  • Junior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) saw limited action in the first half after picking up two early fouls, but stilled managed to contribute 17 points and four rebounds in just 22 minutes of action. Fasoyiro scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half.
  • Redshirt senior Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) connected on 4-of-5 shots and totaled 13 points, three rebounds, a block and a steal. He has now registered at least one block in 19 of 20 games this year.
  • Junior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) made two three-pointers and chipped in 10 points and five rebounds, while senior Ryan Salzberg (Manlius, N.Y.) also made two three-pointers and finished with 10 points and four assists.
  • Junior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) and freshman Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) both added valuable minutes off the bench. Hemphill totaled seven points, a team high nine rebounds and three steals in 22 minutes, while Glover played 13 minutes and totaled seven points, two assists and a steal.
  • Sophomore guard Shamar Chester totaled 21 points, five rebounds and five assists for Queens, while senior center Tyler Carey registered 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
GAME NOTES
  • Queens, which posted a 70-65 win at Daemen earlier this year, was looking to sweep the regular-season series for the first time ever. Daemen has now prevailed in 12 of the last 13 meetings between the two teams and the Wildcats own a 17-3 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Both teams went on runs early in the game. Queens outscored the Wildcats 17-6 over the first four minutes, before Daemen answered with a 16-4 run. A three-pointer by MacDonald capped the run and gave Daemen its first lead of the game, 22-21.
  • Daemen later took a 40-28 lead following back-to-back breakaway dunks by Hemphill and Atkins, but Queens closed out the half with five unanswered points and Daemen took a 40-33 lead into intermission.
  • Daemen held a nine-point lead, 52-43, six minutes into the second half, but a three-pointer by sophomore Tyron Wright sparked the Knights on a 12-4 run which cut the lead to a point, 56-55.
  • The Daemen lead was still one point, 62-61, with just over five minutes left when Mason took a feed from MacDonald and drilled a three-pointer that sparked the Wildcats on a decisive 14-3 run. Mason made both of his three-pointers and scored eight of his 10 points during the run. A jumper by Fasoyiro with 2:35 left capped the rally and gave Daemen a 76-64 lead.
  • Queens came no closer than seven points down the stretch.
  • Salzberg recorded his 200th career assist today. He has totaled 201 helpers in 86 career games.
  • MacDonald played in his 100th collegiate game Friday night at Molloy.
  • Mason has moved into the Top-10 in career three-point field goals made at Daemen. He has gone 147-for-316 from downtown over his career and his career three-point percentage of .465 ranks second among Daemen's all-time leaders.
  • Atkins is now just two blocks shy of becoming just the fifth player in program history to record 50 or more blocks in a season. He has racked up 48 blocks this season and 74 career rejections and stands just four blocks shy of moving into the Top-10 in career blocks at Daemen.
  • After shooting just 36-percent from the field in Friday's loss at Molloy, Daemen shot 55-percent (31-for-56) from the field today and was 7-of-18 from downtown. The Wildcats made 13-of-20 from the charity stripe
  • Queens shot 39-percent (24-for-62) from the field overall and was 5-of-15 from downtown. The Knights attempted 26 free throws and made 19.
  • Queens grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and finished with a 37-31 edge in total rebounds.
  • The hosts held a 20-9 edge in second chance points, while the Wildcats finished with a 15-8 advantage in points off turnovers and a 44-28 edge in points in the paint.
NEXT JUMP BALL
Daemen is idle until next weekend when it hosts the College of Staten Island (Feb. 3) and the University of the District of Columbia (Feb. 5) in ECC games.
