Wildcats Cruise To 93-62 Win Over Staten Island

AMHERST, N.Y. – Redshirt senior Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) scored 15 points and senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) added 14 points lead the Daemen University men's basketball team to a 93-62 win over the College of Staten Island this evening at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus.

Daemen, which has won 11 of its last 13 games, improved to 14-7 overall and 7-4 in the East Coast Conference. Staten Island has lost four of its last five games and dropped to 6-15 overall and 4-8 in the league.

The Wildcats entered the game ranked 10th in the latest NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region poll.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • All 13 players that saw action for the Wildcats scored in the game.
  • Atkins connected on 5-of-7 shots, was a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe and grabbed four rebounds.
  • MacDonald went 2-of-4 from downtown and also grabbed two rebounds.
  • Junior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) added 11 points and three rebounds, while sophomore Payton Shumpert (Syracuse, N.Y.) drilled three three-pointers and scored 11 points.
  • Redshirt freshman Tyler Putney (Fredonia, N.Y.) contributed eight points, five rebounds and two assists in just nine minutes of action, while freshman Ben Bill (Hanburg, N.Y.) scored seven points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
  • Sophomore David Shkolniy went 4-of-7 from three-point land and scored a team-high 18 points for the Dolphins.
GAME NOTES
  • Daemen has now prevailed in all four meetings between the two schools.
  • Daemen outscored the Dolphins 20-10 over the first 10 minutes of the game, but the visitors countered with a 10-2 run and cut the lead to two points, 22-20 following a layup by senior guard Chris Velasquez with 6:49 left in the half.
  • Daemen scored the next 12 points and later took a 38-22 lead following a conventional three point play by Bill with just under three minutes left before intermission. Daemen would take a 42-27 lead into the break.
  • Daemen opened the second half with a 15-7 run which gave the hosts a 23-point lead, 57-24, five minutes into the second half.
  • The Wildcats later took their largest lead of the game, 71-38, following a jumper by Shumpert with 9:22 left and the Dolphins came no closer than 23 points the rest of the way.
  • Junior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) made one three-pointer tonight and is now just two triples shy of 150 for his career.
  • Atkins did not register a block for just the second time all season and remains two blocks shy of becoming just the fifth player in program history to record 50 or more blocks in a season.
  • Daemen shot 48-percent (31-for-65) from the field today and was 11-for-32 from downtown. The 32 three-pointers attempted are the most in a game this season. The Wildcats made a season-best 20-of-22 from the charity stripe.
  • Staten Island shot 35-percent (23-for-65) from the field overall and was just 5-of-23 from downtown. The Dolphins attempted 13 free throws and made 11.
  • Daemen finished with a commanding 49-29 edge in total rebounds. The Wildcats grabbed 14 offensive rebounds which led to a 17-6 advantage in second chance points.
  • The Dolphins finished with a 12-10 advantage in points off turnovers, while Daemen posted a 34-26 edge in points in the paint.
NEXT JUMP BALL
Daemen returns to action Sunday (Feb. 5) when it hosts the University of the District of Columbia in an ECC game at 2 p.m. UDC improved to 8-12 overall and 6-5 in the ECC following a 92-71 win at D'Youville tonight.
