Men's Tennis Drops 5-4 Decision To Allegheny In Fall Finale

MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Daemen University men's tennis team closed out the fall portion of its 2023-24 schedule with a 5-4 loss at Allegheny College today. Daemen dropped to 1-4, while Allegheny improved to 2-1.

The match was played under NCAA Division III scoring rules and Allegheny held a 2-1 lead after doubles competition. No. 1 doubles had to go to a tie breaker to decide the winner. Anton Hedlund and David Rodriguez of Allegheny prevailed over fifth-year senior Luis de Vuyst (Antwerp, Belgium) and junior Juan Alvarez (Puebla, Mexico), 8-7 (7-5). No. 2 doubles was also competitive, as Will Jarvie and Benedek Kaibas of Allegheny posted an 8-4 win over sophomore Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) and freshman Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany). Daemen cruised to a win at No. 3 doubles, as graduate student Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ontario) and junior Jayven Williamson (Minneapolis, Minn.) defeated freshman Reid Stasolla and sophomore Nathan Kisiel, 8-1.

The teams split the six singles matches. Daemen picked up wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, while the Gators prevailed at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6. Hedlund rallied for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-1 win over de Vuyst at No. 1. Alvarez defeated Rodriguez (6-4, 7-5) at No. 2, Jarvie defeated Chitanand (6-3, 7-5) at No. 3, Mergens downed Kaibas (6-4, 6-0) at No. 4, Laplante defeated sophomore Evan Nelson (7-5, 6-3) at No. 5 and sophomore Mitchell Curtis defeated Williamson (6-1, 6-3) at No. 6.

Alvarez and Mergens both improved to 3-3 in singles play on the year, while Laplante is now 2-3.

Today's match marked the fourth all-time meeting between the Wildcats and the Gators. Allegheny has prevailed in all four matchups.
