Wildcats Rally For 4-3 Win Over Huskies In Spring Opener

HERSHEY, Pa. - The Daemen University men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2023-24 schedule in dramatic fashion, as the Wildcats rallied for a 4-3 victory over Bloomsburg University this evening at Hershey Tennis Club. Daemen improved to 2-4, while Bloomsburg dropped to 1-1.

Tonight's match was played under NCAA Division I/II scoring rules and the BU claimed the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. Vishesh Patel and Sergio Dilan of BU prevailed over sophomore Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.H.) and junior Juan Alvarez (Puebla, Mexico), 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. The Huskies secured the doubles point after Fernando Barros and Jaime Soria defeated junior Jayven Williamson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and freshman Lucas Garcia (Bogota, Columbia) at second doubles. Daemen prevented the doubles sweep after sophomore Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) and freshman Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany) posted a 6-4 win over Landon Wall and Iu Casamitjana at No. 3 doubles.

Daemen fell behind 3-0 after Denis Dementry outlasted Alavarez (6-3, 7-5) at No. 2 singles and Albert Martin defeated Chitanand at No. 3 singles (7-5, 6-4).

The Wildcats began the comeback after Lumanog defeated Vishesh at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Garcia, who joined the program this semester, picked up his first career singles win and made the score 3-2 after he downed Barros at No. 4 singles (6-4, 7-5). The Wildcats evened the match after freshman Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany) rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Soria at No. 5 singles. The match came down to No. 6 singles, and graduate student Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ont.) secured the comeback after he posted a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win over Casamitjana.

Mergens improved to 4-3 in singles play on the year, while Laplante is now 3-3.
