Women's Cross Country Places Sixth at Canisius Alumni Classic

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Daemen University women's cross country team placed sixth out of 12 teams on a rainy Saturday afternoon  at the Canisius Alumni Classic at Buffalo's Delaware Park. The Wildcats ran as a pack this afternoon, with the top five runners all finishing within 17 places in the race before the East Coast Conference Championship next weekend. 

Senior Camryn Bailey (Geneva, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats today, finishing 33rd overall with a time of 19:46.1. Running in her second race of the season, graduate student Courtney Merrill (Speedway, Ind.) placed 38th overall, crossing the finish line at 19:48.9 for her first 5K of the 2023 season. Junior Emma Cain (Lockport, N.Y.) finished two spots behind Merrill at 40th overall with a time of 19:50.1.

Sophomore Patsy Oberholzer (Greece, N.Y.) and fifth year senior Hannah Thomas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) finished at 56th and 57th, with Oberholzer posting a time of 20:37.4 and Thomas finishing right after her at 20:37.6 to round out the Daemen scoring. 

Sophomore Hayley Pizur (Grand Island, N.Y.) was the final Daemen runner on Saturday, finishing 76th overall with a time of 21:51.2. 

Host team Canisius raced to a first place finish after placing all five runners in the top-10, including the first and third place runners, to finish with a team score of 24. Binghamton (40), Detroit Mercy (103), D'Youville (126) and Buffalo (170) rounded out the top five in the race. Daemen (181), Oswego State (193), Le Moyne (201), SUNY-ESF (214) and Canisius Alumni (289) rounded out the top 10. Roberts Wesleyan (290) and Hilbert (306) were the final teams on the day. 

The Wildcats will race in the ECC Championships next Saturday in Rochester, N.Y. at the Matt St. James Cross Country Course.
