Late Run Lifts Bulls Over Upset-Minded Wildcats, 71-67

AMHERST, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo used a 15-6 run over the final five minutes to secure a 71-67 victory over upset-minded Daemen University in an exhibition men's basketball game tonight at UB's Alumni Arena.

It marked the first of two exhibition games against Division I programs the Division II Wildcats will play as they prepare for the start of the 2023-24 season.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Graduate student guard/forward Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) scored 15 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
  • Senior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) added 15 points and seven boards in just 17 minutes off the bench.
  • Senior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals, while sophomore Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored all of his seven points in the first half and also added five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
  • Freshman Zach Philipkoski (New Hartford, N.Y.) played eight minutes off the bench and contributed a three-pointer and seven points.
  • Senior Isaiah Adams paced the Bulls with 15 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four blocks.

GAME NOTES
  • Buffalo never held a double-digit lead after halftime. The Bulls took a 54-46 lead following a jumper by Adams midway through the second half, but the Wildcats put together a 15-2 run and opened up a 61-56 lead after Fasoyiro drilled a three-pointer with 5:22 to play.
  • Daemen still held a four-point lead, 65-61, with just under two minutes left, but a three-pointer by Adams sparked a 9-0 run for the Bulls. A bucket by sophomore Shawn Fulcher with 15 seconds left capped the run and gave the hosts a 70-65 lead.
  • Buffalo jumped out to a 15-2 lead, but the Wildcats outscored the Bulls 18-6 over the next seven minutes and cut the lead to a point, 21-20, after Glover drilled a three-pointer with seven minutes left before halftime.
  • The teams traded baskets for the next four minutes and the Bulls still led by a point, 25-24, when the hosts closed out the half on an 8-2 run. UB took a 33-26 lead into halftime.
  • Daemen shot 44-percent (15-34) from the field after halftime and finished 27-69 (39%) from the field overall. The Wildcats made just 4-of-20 from three-point land and missed eight free throws (9-17)
  • UB shot 45-percent overall (26-of-58) and made 9-of-25 from downtown. The hosts canned 10-of-14 from the charity stripe.
