Wildcats Scratch Past Lions, Remain Unbeaten In ECC Play

Zeitz nets game-winner on PK, Carpenter scores a pair

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's soccer team picked up a key East Coast Conference victory today as the Wildcats defeated visiting Molloy University 4-1 at a blustery Karrer Field. The Wildcats and Lions opened the day as two of the three remaining teams without an ECC loss this season.

Daemen is now unbeaten in their last seven contests (6-0-1) with today's result marking their fifth straight win. The Wildcats improved to 6-3-1 overall and 4-0-0 in ECC play, keeping pace with fellow ECC unbeaten Roberts Wesleyan University (8-1-2, 4-0-1 ECC). Molloy, which came into the game ranked 10th the East Region by the United Soccer Coaches, dropped to 4-3-4 overall and 2-1-1 in the league.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Wildcats opened the scoring at the 31:19 mark when senior striker Brooke Amato (Grand Island, N.Y.) found herself on the end of a beautiful crossing feed from junior defender Baylin Tighe (Tonawanda, N.Y.). The goal was the result of some passing through the midfield as senior Tatyjana Scalisi (Williamsville, N.Y.) sent the ball to an open area on the right wing where Tighe had jumped into the offensive play. Tighe's crosser found the streaking Amato near the center of the box where she was able to finish the play with her first goal of the season (13th of her career). Both Tighe and Scalisi were credited with assists on the play.
  • Molloy would get the equalizer shortly into the second half. Sarah Tappeto's corner kick found Madison Keenan near the back post. Keenan deflected the ball over the goal line at the 47:13 mark,
  • But, Daemen managed a response shortly thereafter as senior midfielder Lauren Cuisia (Mississauga, Ont.) was tripped up inside the Molloy box resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for the Wildcats. Senior midfielder Madita Zeitz (Malsch, Germany) stepped up to take the PK, and she coolly delivered a shot to the lower left portion of the goal, putting the Wildcats back on top at the 54:44 mark.
  • Freshman midfielder Magda Carpenter (Lebanon, Conn.) struck for back-to-back goals to provide even more insurance for the Wildcats. Carpenter netted an unassisted tally at the 65:21 mark when she carried into the right side of the box and launched a high shot inside the far post. Her second marker came at the 74:54 mark as she accepted a pass from midfielder Demi McCalliog (Wolverhampton, England) and side-stepped Molloy goalkeeper Elyse Muñoz who came charging off her line to challenge.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) made four saves to pick up her sixth win of the season between the pipes.
GAME NOTES
  • Today's contest marked the 10th all-time meeting between the Wildcats and the Lions; Daemen trails in the series 6-4. The Wildcats avenged last season's 4-0 loss to the Lions.
  • Carpenter recorded the second multi-goal game of her career today. She ranks second on the team in both goals (5) and points (12) this season.
  • Zeitz's goal was her second of the season (both on penalty kicks) which marks a new career-high for single season scoring. She has totaled five goals, six assists and 16 points in 47 career games.
  • Scalisi's assist gives her 33 points in her Daemen career; she stands just five points shy of breaking into the program's top 10 for career points.
  • Amato is also gaining on the top 10 point producers in program history, now with 29 points in her career.
  • Schultz has allowed just four goals over the last seven games; she entered today's game leading the ECC in save percentage (857).
  • Daemen sits atop the ECC standings with 12 points through their first four conference games.
  • In their seven-game unbeaten stretch, the Wildcats have outscored opponents 21-4.
