Daemen, which is ranked fifth in the College Sports Communicators Division II (CSCD2) East Region poll, saw its three game winning streak come to an end and dropped to 4-3 on the year. Dominican is ranked ninth in the CSCD2 East Region poll and improved to 3-0. IMPACT PLAYERS Senior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) scored 17 points in the second half and finished with a game-high 21 points. He also added eight rebounds and three assists. Graduate student Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.), the reigning East Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, added 19 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and a career-high five steals. Sophomore Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) played 36 minutes and totaled 11 points and two assists, while senior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) played 39 minutes and contributed 10 points, three rebounds and two assists. GAME NOTES It marked just the fifth all-time meeting, and the first since the 2016-17 season, between the two teams. Daemen has prevailed in three of the five meetings. Dominican is a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The Chargers went 21-9 overall (12-6 CACC), lost in the quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament last year. The Chargers were picked second in the CACC North Division preseason coaches' poll. Daemen returns four starters from last year's team that finished 20-8 overall and 12-4 in the East Coast Conference. The Wildcats were picked second in the ECC preseason poll. Dominican, which scored over 100 points in each of its first two games, came out hot and led 11-4 after the first four minutes. Daemen settled in and eventually took their first lead of the game, 16-15, following a three-pointer by Glover with 12:18 left before halftime. Both teams struggled to score over the eight minutes and the Chargers held a 26-24 lead when the hosts got a layup from senior Joshua Serrano and a three-pointer by sophomore Isaiah Honis to take a 31-24 lead. Daemen answered with the next four points, but Dominican got a putback from junior Jaden Honis and a buzzer-beating layup from Smith to take a 35-28 lead into halftime. Daemen opened the second half with a three-pointer by Mason, but the Chargers answered with an 8-2 run and the hosts took a double-digit lead, 43-33, after Smith canned two free throws at the 16:22 mark. The lead grew to 15 points, 60-45, following layup by junior Seth Sharif-Brown midway through the second half. The lead was 13 points, when back-to-back three-pointers by Glover and Fasoyiro sparked the Wildcats in a 10-1 run. A layup by Atkins off a feed from Fasoyiro capped the run and cut the Dominican lead to four points, 62-58, with just over six minutes left. Another layup by Atkins with 4:48 left made it a two-point game, 67-65, and Dominican came up empty on its next possession. Daemen could not capitalize at the other end and the hosts later regained a six-point lead 71-65 following a layup by Serrano with just under three minutes left. Neither team scored again until the 1:42 mark when senior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) made one-of-two free throws for the Wildcats. Senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) collected the offensive rebound following the miss and scored to make it a three-point game, 71-68. The teams then traded turnovers before Joshuel White made two free throws for the Chargers with 57 seconds left to make it 73-68. Mason was off the mark with a three-pointer at the other end, but Fasoyiro got the offensive rebound and was fouled. He made two free throws with 38 seconds left to once again make it a one-possession game, 73-70. Daemen then forced a turnover and following a timeout Fasoyiro scored with 16 seconds left to make it 73-72. Joseph Merrell hit two free throws for the hosts with eight seconds left and Fasoyiro's game-tying three-point attempt at the buzzer was no good. Daemen, which entered the game shooting 49-percent from the field, connected on just 9-of-24 shots (37.5%) in the first half and finished 24-for-60 (40%) from the field overall. The Wildcats connected on just 8-of-27 three-pointers and made 16-of-20 from the charity stripe. Dominican finished 26-of-57 (46%) from the field overall and made 6-of-17 from downtown. The Chargers canned 17-of-26 from the charity stripe. Daemen committed a season-high 20 turnovers and Dominican finished with a 22-15 edge in points off turnovers.
