IMPACT PLAYERS Four players scored in double figures for the Wildcats. Senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) finished with 15 points. Senior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) drilled three three-pointers and totaled 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) added 12 points, while graduate student guard/forward Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) chipped in four points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Freshman Irish Coquia scored nine first-half points for the Red Leafs and finished with four three-pointers and 17 points. GAME NOTES It marked the first ever meeting between the two programs. SFU is a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) and finished 6-22 overall and 1-17 in the GNAC last year. The Red Leafs were picked 10th in the GNAC preseason poll. Daemen returns four starters from last year's team that finished 20-8 overall and 12-4 in the East Coast Conference. The Wildcats were picked second in the ECC preseason poll and are receiving votes in the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) Division II preseason poll. SFU held a 10-5 lead five minutes into the game, but a three-pointer by Glover sparked the Wildcats on a 17-7 run. A driving layup by freshman Ryan Heath (Rochester, N.Y.) with 8:10 left in the half capped the run and gave Daemen a 22-17 lead. Daemen took its largest lead of the first half, 26-20, following a bucket by MacDonald at the 6:30 mark, but the Red Leafs outscored the Wildcats 19-8 the rest of the half and SFU took a 39-34 lead into the break. SFU held a 47-43 lead when a triple by Mason started a 12-0 run for the Wildcats. A layup by Fasoyiro with 9:37 left capped the spurt and gave Daemen a 55-47 lead. Daemen went scoreless for the next 4:33 which allowed the Red Leafs to make it a one-possession game (55-53), but the Wildcats scored the next five points to regain a seven-point lead, 60-53, with just over four minutes left. The Daemen lead was four points, 58-62, with just over a minute left when Mason hit a clutch three-pointer. Mason would also hit two free throws with seven seconds left to give the Wildcats a 68-63 lead. Daemen shot 45-percent (26-58) from the field overall and made 7-of-23 from three-point land. The Wildcats were 12-of-21 from the charity stripe. SFU finished 24-of-61 (39%) from the field overall and made 9-of-25 from downtown. The Red Leafs canned 9-of-13 from the charity stripe. NEXT JUMP BALL The tournament concludes Sunday (Nov. 5) and Daemen will square off against Seattle Pacific University. The game tips off at 12:45 p.m. PST (3:45 p.m. EST). Seattle Pacific has lost its first two games of the tournament, losing to St. Edward's (77-72) and Hawaii Hilo (76-57).
