Atkins Totals 17 Points And 15 Rebounds As Wildcats Outlast Molloy, 74-66

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Graduate student Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Daemen University men's basketball team to a 74-66 victory over Molloy University this evening at Quealy Gymnasium on the Molloy campus.

Daemen, which is ranked seventh in the Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) East Region poll, has now won four-straight and seven of its last eight games. The Wildcats improved to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the East Coast Conference. Molloy dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the league.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Atkins, who was named the ECC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season on Monday, connected on 7-of-16 shots and also totaled three assists, three blocks and two steals. It marked the second double-double of the year for Atkins, who totaled 19 points and 13 boards in a loss at regionally ranked Dominican.
  • Sophomore Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) played 34 minutes and totaled 12 points, five assists and three steals.
  • Senior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) went 3-of-6 from downtown and totaled 11 points and four assists. He has now scored in double figures in eight-straight games. Mason recorded his 200th career three-pointer during the game, making him just the seventh player in program history to reach that milestone.
  • Senior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) scored 11 points in just 23 minutes, while senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) added 10 points and five boards.
  • Freshman Rob Matos paced the Lions with 19 points.

GAME NOTES
  • It marked the first time since the 2019-20 season that Daemen has won at Quealy Gym. Daemen now owns a 13-8 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Daemen has limited seven of its 11 opponents to less than 70 points and leads the ECC in team defense, allowing just 69.4 points per game.
  • Daemen entered the game leading the ECC in field goal percentage (.495) but shot just 41-percent (28-68) from the field tonight.
  • Daemen jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but the host Lions answered with an 11-3 run and took a 15-13 following a layup by Matos with 12:14 left in the half.
  • The Molloy lead was 21-16 when a three-pointer by senior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) sparked the Wildcats on a 16-6 run. Back-to-back three-pointers by Mason and MacDonald capped the run and gave the Wildcats a 32-27 lead. Daemen would take a 40-37 lead into halftime.
  • Molloy took a 48-45 lead following a three-pointer by graduate student Jalen Rosemond with 14:28 left to play, but Daemen scored the next seven points and took a 52-48 lead following a steal and layup by Glover with 12:52 left.
  • Both teams struggled to score over the next eight minutes and Daemen held a 62-60 lead when the Wildcats got two huge three-pointers from Fasoyiro to take a 68-60 lead with just under four minutes left.
  • Molloy score the next four points to cut the lead in half, but a layup by MacDonald with 46 seconds left gave Daemen a 70-64 lead. Molloy came up empty on its next possession and MacDonald hit two free throws with 29 seconds left to seal the win.
  • Daemen shot just 37-percent (13-for-35) in the second half and finished 28-for-68 (41%) from the field overall. The Wildcats connected on 10-of-27 three-pointers and made 8-of-14 from the charity stripe.
  • Molloy finished 28-of-68 (42%) from the field overall and made just 6-of-21 from downtown. The Lions canned 4-of-8 from the charity stripe.
