CANTON, N.Y. -- The Daemen University men's tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss at Division III St. Lawrence in a match played at the Newell Field House on Saturday afternoon. Daemen, which came into this afternoon's match with a 1-1 record in the spring season after splitting last weekend's matches with a 4-3 win against Rochester Institute of Technology and a 7-0 loss to Niagara University, dropped to 1-2 in the spring. St. Lawrence moves to 1-1.
The Saints earned three points as per NCAA Division III scoring after sweeping all three doubles matches. St. Lawrence's team of Ben Moolman and Nathan Turtledove outlasted Daemen's
Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M.) and
Luis de Vuyst (Antwerp, Belgium) at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. The Saints team of John Hill-Edgar and Edvin Strandberg won the No. 3 doubles match 8-2, taking down Daemen's young duo of
Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) and
Jayven Williamson (Minneapolis, Minn.). The Daemen senior pairing of
Phillip Vance (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and
Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ont.) put St. Lawrence's team of Adam Heilbronner and Brody Pinto to the test, but the Saints were able to pull off the No. 2 doubles match, 8-5, to complete the doubles sweep.
The Saints added their fourth point of the match as Pinto topped Chitanand 6-0, 7-6 at No. 4 singles, and St. Lawrence picked up the match win with a No. 1 singles victory of Turtledove over Lumanog, 6-2, 6-3. de Vuyst picked up a first set win but then fell to Heillbronner 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. Daemen won their first point in No. 3 singles as Vance topped Strandberg in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 5-7, 10-5. The Wildcats picked up another point when Laplante topped Cole Hamilton 7-5, 6-2 in No. 5 singles.
