Men's Tennis Tops Houghton 8-1 In Wednesday Non-League Match

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Daemen University men's tennis team won their third match of the spring, topping Houghton University 8-1 in a non-league match on Wednesday afternoon at the Kerr-Pegula Field House. With the victory, the Wildcats have won two of the last three matches after sweeping Kutztown 7-0 on March 9. Daemen is 3-8 on the year, while the Highlanders drop to 3-4 overall. 

Daemen opened up the match with a sweep in doubles, earning three total doubles play points as per NCAA Division III scoring rules. The senior pairing of Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ont.) and Phillip Vance (Orchard Park, N.Y.) opened up the scoring with an 8-4 takedown of Houghton's Micah Schilke and Marcelo Garcia in No. 2 doubles. Freshman Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M.) and senior Luis de Vuyst (Antwerp, Belgium) topped Levi Webb and Jaimie Staerkle in No. 1 doubles with a score of 8-5. The freshman Daemen pair of Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) and Adam Pasierb (Lancaster, N.Y.) finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Matt Cicero and Nolan Zach in No. 3 doubles. 

Vance kept the scoring going for the Wildcats with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Webb in No. 3 singles. Chitanand earned Daemen's fifth point and secured the match victory for the Cats with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in No. 4 singles, and Laplante made it a 6-0 match with his No. 5 singles victory over Zach, 6-3, 6-2. De Vuyst picked up a No. 2 singles win over Staerkle, 6-3, 77-62. Lumanog was defeated in No. 1 singles, but Pasierb picked up Daemen's eighth and final point with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-2 win over Schilke.

Daemen return to home court for the first time since Feb. 3 with a Friday (March 17) night matchup against Bloomsburg. The Wildcats and Huskies will begin play at Miller Tennis Center on Friday at 8 PM.
