Strong Second Half Lifts Findlay To 17-10 Win Over Daemen

FINDLAY, OHIO – Senior Danielle Dilorenzo scored six goals and classmate Izzy Murphy-Morrow added five goals to lead the University of Findlay women's lacrosse team to a 17-10 victory over Daemen University this afternoon at Russ and Peg Armstrong Sports Complex on the Findlay campus.

Findlay held a 10-9 lead early in the third quarter and the hosts outscored the Wildcats 7-1 the rest of the way to secure the win.

Daemen saw its two-game winning streak come to an end and dropped to 3-4 on the year. The host Oilers improved to 2-6. Findlay is a NCAA Division II affiliate and a member of the Great Midwest Conference (G-MAC). Findlay returns 14 players from last year's team that went 11-7 overall and 9-1 in G-MAC play. The Oilers advanced to the championship game of the G-MAC Tournament last year and were picked to finish second in the G-MAC preseason poll.

The 2023 campaign marks the inaugural season for Daemen, which officially announced it was adding women's lacrosse as a varsity sport in June of 2021.

Freshmen Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats with three goals. It marked the third straight game that she has scored three goals. Graduate student Casey Decatur (Apollo Beach, Fla.) and freshman Avery Castner (Penn Yan, N.Y.) both added two goals and one assist, while junior Dana Bacher (Hamburg, N.Y.), the reigning East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week, also netted two goals for the Wildcats.

A back-and-forth first quarter was tied at 2-2 when Findlay got a man-up goal from Murphy-Morrow with just 32 seconds left in the frame. Findlay took a 4-2 lead following a goal by freshman Tessa Chuba early in the second quarter, but Daemen responded with back-to-back goals by Bouley and Bacher to tie the game at 4-4. Findlay regained a two-goal advantage, but Daemen answered once again and tied the game at 6-6 after freshman Kyle Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) scored a man-up goal off a pass from Decatur with 5:34 left before halftime. The Oilers regained control with four consecutive goals and the hosts would take a 10-7 lead into halftime.

Bacher and Decatur scored early in the third quarter to make it a one goal game (10-9), but the Oilers struck for two goals in the span of 38 seconds to regain a 12-9 lead. Findlay later took a 14-9 lead following an unassisted goal by senior Emma Heinrich with just under five minutes to play in the third quarter.

Daemen cut the lead to 14-10 after Castner scored a free position goal less than three minutes into the final quarter, but the Oilers scored the next two goals and later took a 17-10 lead after Murphy-Morrow scored her fifth goal of the game with 7:36 left to play.

Freshman Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.) went the distance in net for Daemen and recorded a season-high 13 saves. Senior Rachel Bornstein, who earned G-MAC Goalie of the Year last year, stopped 10 shots for the Oilers.

Bouley led the Wildcats with seven draw controls, while Bacher registered five draw controls. Graduate student Hayley Latvala (Grand Island, N.Y.) collected a team-high four ground balls for Daemen.

Findlay posted a 41-24 advantage in total shots and a 30-20 edge in shots on goal. Daemen finished with an 18-13 edge in draw controls.

Daemen remains in Ohio and will play at Ashland University on Sunday.
