CO 2 2 2 1 7 Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | 3/31/2023 3:48:00 PM | CONTACT: Tom McDermott, Director of Athletics Communications | tmcdermo@daemen.edu Wildcats Ground Firebirds; Pick Up First Ever Conference Win Nine Different Players Score In 23-7 Victory WASHINGTON, D.C. – Graduate student Casey Decatur (Apollo Beach, Fla.) totaled nine points and freshman Avery Castner (Penn Yan, N.Y.) scored five goals to lead the Daemen University women's lacrosse team to a 23-7 victory over the University of the District of Columbia this afternoon at Georgetown Day School. The marked the first ever East Coast Conference game for Daemen. The 2023 campaign marks the inaugural season for Daemen, which officially announced it was adding women's lacrosse as a varsity sport in June of 2021. The Wildcats (6-5, 1-0 ECC) have won a season-best three straight games and are 5-2 over their last seven games. The Firebirds dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the league. The 23 goals are the most scored in a game by Daemen this season, eclipsing the previous high of 18 the Wildcats scored during an 18-7 win at Edinboro University. Nine different players scored a goal for the Wildcats today. Decatur, the reigning ECC Offensive Player of the Week, totaled three goals and season-high six assists today and has now totaled at least eight points in each of the last three games. She has totaled 26 goals, 30 assists and 56 points this year and leads the ECC in assists and points. Castner, who has now scored a goal in six-straight games, enjoyed her most productive game of the season with five goals and one assist. Junior Dana Bacher Hamburg, N.Y.), the reigning ECC Rookie of the Week, added two goals and three assists and has now scored a team-high 31 goals, which ranks second among the ECC leaders. Freshmen Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Sylvie Dickerman (Corning, N.Y.) both registered their first career hat trick today. Miranto also assisted on three goals and totaled a season-high six points. Fellow rookie Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) also scored three times. It marked the sixth time in the last seven games that Bouley has netted three goals. She ranks third on the team in goals (24) and points (27). Freshman Kira Grzechowiak (West Seneca, N.Y.) capped off the day with her first career goal. Daemen scored the first five goals of the game and later took 14-3 lead late in the second quarter after Castner scored off a feed from Decatur. Daemen took a 14-4 lead into halftime and scored the first three goals of the second half to open up a 17-4 lead. Dickerman's third goal of the game gave Daemen a 20-6 lead five minutes into the final quarter. The Daemen defense, led by graduate student Hayley Latvala (Grand Island, N.Y.), sophomore Emma Fenwick (Buffalo, N.Y.), Grzechowiak and fellow freshman Jenna Havert (Newark, N.Y.), limited UDC to just 10 total shots in the first half. Today marked the fourth time in the last six games that Daemen has held its opponent to less that 10 goals. Freshman Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.) went the distance in net for Daemen and made eight saves. Freshman Natalia Perkins made eight saves for UDC. Sophomore Camryn Day (Hamburg, N.Y.) totaled a team-high seven draw controls and also contributed two goals and two assists. Day has now totaled an ECC-best 72 draw controls on the year. Daemen posted a 41-19 advantage in total shots and a 32-15 edge in shots on goal. Daemen finished with an 22-9 edge in draw controls and the Wildcats were successful in 17-of-18 clear attempts. Daemen is idle until next Saturday (April 8) when it hosts Molloy University in an ECC game.
