BUENA VISTA, VA -- The Daemen University men's tennis team snapped a five-game skid with a 5-4 win over Southern Virginia University on Tuesday afternoon in the first meeting between the two teams. The Wildcats move to 5-13 on the year, while the Knights drop to a 6-3 record this season.
The Wildcats earned two of the first three points of the match, as per NCAA Division III rules, after winning two of the three doubles pairings today. Southern Virginia won No. 3 doubles to open up the match, 6-2. Daemen would go on to win the next two doubles pairs, with the senior pairing of
Phillip Vance (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and
Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ont.) topping Adam Kelly and Marlo Perez, 6-4, in No. 2 doubles.
Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.Y.) and
Luis de Vuyst (Antwerp, Belgium) then took down Marcos Dias and Ethan Campbell (7-6, 7-4) in No. 1 doubles to give the Wildcats the 2-1 advantage after doubles play.
Daemen freshman
Adam Pasierb (Lancaster, N.Y.) kept the Wildcat scoring going, topping Kelly, 6-1, 6-3 in No. 6 singles. After SVU picked up a No. 1 singles victory, Laplante got the Wildcats one point away from taking the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in No. 5 singles. de Vuyst picked up the match victory with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Perez in No. 2 singles. Daemen would finish the match with a 5-4 win over Southern Virginia, marking their fifth victory in non-conference matches this spring.
