Second Half Rally Falls Short; Wildcats Drop 13-10 Decision To Saints

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman Sam Newlin scored five goals and sophomore Brinn Stworzydlak made 14 saves to lead the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team to a 13-10 victory over Daemen University this evening at Dobson Field on the D'Youville campus.
 
Daemen dropped to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in the East Coast Conference. The 2023 campaign marks the inaugural season for Daemen, which officially announced it was adding women's lacrosse as a varsity sport in June of 2021. D'Youville ran its winning streak to seven-straight games and improved to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in the league.

Junior Dana Bacher (Hamburg, N.Y.) scored three goals for Daemen, while sophomore Camryn Day (Hamburg, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists. Bacher has now scored a team-high 38 goals. Graduate student Casey Decatur (Apollo Beach, Fla.) and freshman Avery Castner (Penn Yan, N.Y.) both contributed two goals for Daemen. Decatur has now totaled 29 goals, a league-high 33 assists and a team-high 62 points.

Daemen outscored the Saints 8-4 in the second half, as the Wildcats tried to battle back from a 9-2 halftime deficit.
 
Daemen held a 2-1 lead late in the first quarter, but D'Youville scored four times over the final 6:27 of the first quarter and then scored twice in the first minute of the second quarter to open up a 7-2 lead. The Wildcats were held scoreless in the second quarter and D'Youville took a 9-2 lead into halftime.

The teams traded goals early in the third quarter and D'Youville held an 11-4 lead when the Wildcats began their comeback. Daemen scored three unanswered goals over the final 9:25 of the third quarter and cut the D'Youville lead to three goals, 11-8, after Day scored just 54 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Saints scored an extra-man goal with 12:16 left to regain a four-goal lead, but freshman Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) answered for the Wildcats two minutes later to make it 12-9 D'Youville. The Wildcats would come no closer down the stretch, as Newlin netted her fifth of the game with 8:30 left, before Decatur closed out the scoring with 6:43 left.

Freshman Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.) went the distance in net for Daemen and made six saves. Stworzydiak, who earned second-team All-ECC honors last year as a rookie, made six of her 14 saves in the third quarter has now totaled a league-high 126 saves on the year.

Day and Bouley both totaled a team-high five draw controls for Daemen. Day and has now totaled an ECC-best 87 draw controls on the year. Graduate student Hayley Latvala (Grand Island, N.Y.) and freshman Jenna Havert (Newark, N.Y.) both collected a team-high three ground balls for the Wildcats, while Havert also recorded two caused turnovers.

Daemen outshot the Saints 15-6 in the third quarter and the Wildcats finished with a 37-26 advantage in shots overall. The Wildcats also finished with an 15-11 edge in draw controls.

Daemen returns to action Saturday (April 15) when it plays an ECC game at St. Thomas Aquinas College.
