Strong First Quarter Propels Daemen To 16-8 Win Over Spartans

Decatur Leads The Way With Eight Points

SPARKILL, N.Y. – Graduate student Casey Decatur (Apollo Beach, Fla.) totaled five goals and three assists to lead the Daemen University women's lacrosse team to a 16-8 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College this afternoon at Spartan Field on the STAC campus.
 
Daemen evened its overall record to 7-7 and moved to 2-2 in the East Coast Conference. The 2023 campaign marks the inaugural season for Daemen, which officially announced it was adding women's lacrosse as a varsity sport in June of 2021. STAC dropped to 1-12 overall and remained winless (0-5) in the league.

Junior Dana Bacher (Hamburg, N.Y.) and sophomore Camryn Day (Hamburg, N.Y.) both added four goals and one assist for the Wildcats, while freshmen Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) both chipped in a goal and two assists. Decatur came one point shy of her season-high for points in a game (9) and has now totaled 70 points (34 gls, 36 asts) on the season. Bacher has now scored a team-high 42 goals and ranks second in points with 51.

Daemen scored the first three goals of the game and later took a 6-2 lead after Decatur scored off a feed from Bouley. The teams traded goals early in the second quarter and the score remained 7-3 Daemen until Decatur scored her fourth of the game with 5:40 left before halftime. Daemen would take an 8-4 lead into halftime.
 
The teams traded goals early in the third quarter before Daemen got back-to-back goals by Decatur and freshman Avery Castner (Penn Yan, N.Y.) to take an 11-5 lead. The Wildcats went scoreless over the final nine minutes of the third quarter and Daemen took an 11-7 lead into the final quarter. Daemen regained a five-goal lead, 12-7, following an unassisted goal by Day 2:30 into the fourth quarter, and back-to-back extra-man goals by Bacher and Day late in the fourth quarter secured the win for the Wildcats.

Freshman Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.) went the distance in net for Daemen and made eight saves, which gives her 106 saves on the season. Senior Colleen Stevens stopped 11 shots for the Spartans.

Day totaled a game-high 10 draw controls for Daemen. It marks the fifth time this season she has collected 10 or more draw controls in a game. Day has now totaled an ECC-best 97 draw controls on the year. Day and graduate student Hayley Latvala (Grand Island, N.Y.) both collected a team-high five ground balls for the Wildcats.

Daemen outshot the Spartans 10-5 in the first quarter and the Wildcats finished with a 36-24 advantage in shots overall. The Wildcats also finished with a 15-13 edge in draw controls.

Daemen returns to action Tuesday (April 18) when it hosts Roberts Wesleyan University in an ECC game. It will mark the home finale for Daemen.
