Wildcats Fall To Redhawks In Home Finale

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman Kadie Tierney scored four times and fellow rookie Ella Dossier handed out five assists to lead the Roberts Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team to a 14-1 victory over Daemen University this afternoon at the Medaille Sports Complex.

RWU ran its winning streak to four-straight games and improved to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the East Coast Conference. Daemen, which had won four of its last six games, dropped to 7-8 overall and 2-3 in the ECC. The 2023 campaign marks the inaugural season for Daemen, which officially announced it was adding women's lacrosse as a varsity sport in June of 2021.

Junior Dana Bacher (Hamburg, N.Y.) scored the lone Daemen goal, off a feed from graduate student Casey Decatur (Apollo Beach, Fla.). Decatur has now totaled 71 points (34 gls, 37 asts) on the season, while Bacher has scored a team-high 43 goals and ranks second in points with 52. Decatur and fellow graduate student Hayley Latvala (Grand Island, N.Y.) were honored before the game in recognition of their final home game.

The final margin of victory was deceiving, as the visiting Redhawks were clinging to a 2-1 lead late in the second quarter. RWU took a 3-1 lead after graduate student Alexis Grant scored an unassisted goal with 6:01 left before halftime, and the Redhawks would take a 5-1 lead into the break after junior Sophia Podszebka scored twice in the final 4:38 of the half.

The score remained 5-1 for the first five minutes of the third quarter, before RWU took control with five unanswered goals in the span of six minutes. An unassisted goal by Tierney with 3:54 left in the third capped the run and gave the Redhawks a 10-1 lead.

Freshman Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.) went the distance in net for Daemen and made seven saves. Senior Shawna Lesmerises stopped seven of eight shots on goal for the Redhawks.

Freshman Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) had a team-high four draw controls for Daemen, while Pfohl collected a team-high four ground balls.

Roberts outshot the Wildcats 12-1 in the third quarter and the Redhawks finished with a 28-11 advantage in shots overall. The Redhawks also finished with a 10-8 edge in draw controls.

Daemen is idle until April 29 when it closes out the regular season with an ECC game at Mercy College.
