Men's Tennis Downs Nazareth For First Win Of The Season

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2023-24 season following a 9-0 victory at Nazareth University today. Daemen improved to 1-2, while the host Golden Flyers dropped to 0-3.

The match was played under NCAA Division III scoring rules and Daemen jumped out to a 3-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. Daemen No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M.) and junior Juan Alvarez (Puebla, Mexico) defeated sophomore Pierre Ntonga and junior Griffin Bond, 8-3. Sophomore Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) and freshman Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany) handled graduate student Dominic Vito and sophomore Chris Benedict at No 2 doubles, 8-1 and the Wildcats completed the doubles sweep after fifth-year senior Luis de Vuyst (Antwerp, Belgium) and graduate student Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ontario) cruised past sophomore James Hawkins and junior Noah Britton, 8-0.

Daemen won all six singles matches in straight sets. Lumanog defeated Bond (6-3, 6-0), de Vuyst defeated Vito (6-0, 6-4), Alvarez downed Ntonga (6-0, 6-0), Chitanand defeated Hawkins (6-1, 6-2), Mergens defeated Britton (6-2, 6-1) and Laplante got past senior Enoch Li, 6-0, 6-0.

Today's match marked the first ever meeting between the Wildcats and the Golden Flyers.

Alvarez, de Vuyst, Chitanand and Mergens all evened their singles record to 2-2 on the year, while Laplante and Lumanog both picked up their first singles victory of the season.

#2 – Rohan Chitanand & Lasse Mergens (DAE) defeat Dominic Vito & Chris Benedict (NAZ), 8-1
