Big Second Half Lifts Firebirds Past Wildcats

BOYDS, Md. – The University of the District of Columbia struck for two goals early in the second half en route to a 4-0 victory over Daemen University here today in East Coast Conference men's soccer action. The host Firebirds picked up their first league win of the year and are now 3-4-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the ECC. Daemen dropped to 2-5-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the league.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The hosts outshot the Wildcats 8-1 during a scoreless first half, and the Firebirds took control with two goals in the span of 2:26 early in the second half.
  • Junior Santiago Gordillo Martinez headed home a free kick by classmate Giovanni Campero at 51:53 and the hosts took a 2-0 lead when freshman Isaiah Daniel blasted a low shot past Daemen netminder Harry Firth (Reading, England) from 20 yards out at 54:19.
  • Sophomore Alex Gamez scored twice in the final 13 minutes to close out the scoring.
  • The Firebirds finished with a 23-2 edge in total shots and an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal. The hosts also posted a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
  • Firth went the distance in net for Daemen and made a season-high seven saves. Junior Sergio Becerra made one save for the Firebirds.
GAME NOTES
  • Today's contest marked the 10th all-time meeting between the two schools. The Firebirds improved to 9-0-1 in the all-time series.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats return to action Wednesday (Oct. 4) when they travel to Erie, Pa. to face nationally ranked Mercyhurst University in a non-conference match.
