Men's Tennis Drops Close Match At Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Daemen University men's tennis team dropped a close match against undefeated Kutztown University on Monday afternoon, falling 4-3 to the Bears. The Wildcats move to 2-3 in the fall, while Kutztown remains unbeaten on the year and improves to 5-0.

The Bears earned the first point of the match after taking two of three doubles matches. Kutztown's third doubles pair of Emmitt Robinson and Linus Vennekold defeated Daemen junior Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) and senior Jayven Williamson (Minneapolis, Minn.), 6-3 to start off the match, but the Wildcats rebounded with a big win at No. 2 doubles. Sophmores Lucas Garcia (Bogota, Columbia) and Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany) took down Nikita Safonov and Joaquin Perez, 6-3, in second doubles. It all came down to first doubles. Kutztown's Dang Nguyen and Henrique Rocha beat Daemen senior Juan Alvarez (Puebla, Mexico) and junior Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M), 6-3, to win the doubles point.

Kutztown served up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles as Safonov topped Lumanog (6-3, 6-4) and Rocha beat Garcia (6-3, 6-4) to take a 3-0 lead over the Wildcats. Daemen wouldn't give up so easily, as a big (6-4, 6-4) win by Alvarez over Nguyen at first singles kept the Wildcats in it. Alvarez moves to 2-0 in No. 1 singles on the year with the win. Vennekold would solidify the win for the Bears with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Williamson. The Wildcats would score two more points as Mergens and Chitanand each took their matches in three sets at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Mergens topped Perez, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, at fourth singles to move to 3-1 on the year in that spot, while Chitanand took down Robinson, 6-4, 6-3, 10-8, at No. 5 singles to rebound from a three-set loss on Saturday.
