COLCHESTER, VT – Saint Michael's College outshot Daemen, 23-8, to come away with a 2-1 win in intercollegiate women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Duffy Field.
With the win, the Purple Knights, who entered the game ranked seventh in the latest
United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll, improved to 8-1-3 while the Wildcats moved to 5-6 overall.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Saint Michael's pressured the Daemen defense off the opening whistle, firing five shots in the first 11:37 of the contest. Still, junior goalkeeper
Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) was able to stop the two shots that went on target to keep the sides scoreless.
• The hosts broke the deadlock in the 38
th minute as Cassie Tofteroo found the back of the net after receiving a pass from Emilia McGiffert.
• Out of the halftime break, the Purple Knights again applied pressure to the Daemen defense, but Schultz again stood tall, making four saves to keep the score at 1-0 midway through the second stanza.
• The Wildcats broke through in the 86
th minute as Chloé Cardone (Hilton, N.Y.) controlled a pass from junior
Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and rifled the ball past Jesse Ferdinand to draw the two sides even.
Allie O'Donnell (Georgetown, Ont.) was credited with a secondary assist on the goal.
• Saint Michael's was able to escape with a 2-1 win due to a Daemen own goal at the 89:39 mark.
• Ferdinand made four saves for the Purple Knights while Schultz tallied seven saves of her own. Both played the full 90 minutes as well.
GAME NOTES
• Today marked the third meeting between the two sides. Saint Michael's remains undefeated in the series at 2-0-1.
• Saint Michael's is the third team this season that Daemen faced who was either ranked regionally or nationally.
• Along with Schultz,

Amanda Nilsson (Malmö, Sweden) and

• Cardone has now scored in three of her last five matches.
• O'Donnell picked up her first collegiate point with her assist in the 86th minute.
• With her assist today, Miranto has now tallied at least one point in six of her last seven matches.
