AMHERST, N.Y. – Myles Palmer scored twice in the second half to propel Roberts Wesleyan to a 2-1 win over Daemen University in East Coast Conference men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Karrer Field.
With the win, the Redhawks improved to 4-3-1 overall and 2-1-0 in conference action while the Wildcats dropped to 3-3-2 and 0-2-1 in ECC play.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Neither side was able to find the back of the net in the first half. Senior
Arturo Bustamante (South Gate, Calif.) totaled five saves during the opening 45 minutes to keep Roberts Wesleyan off the board.
• Out of halftime, Palmer broke the deadlock for the Redhawks in the 53
rd minute as he cut past Bustamante in the box and lofted the ball into the back of the net.
• Roberts Wesleyan doubled their advantage less than three minutes later as Palmer recieved a pass from Cooper Kerridge during the Redhawks counter attack and shot the ball past Bustamante into the back of the net for his second of the contest.
• The Wildcats were able to get a goal back as graduate student
Dennis Montero Guerrero (Weingarten, Germany) collected a pass from senior
Rayane Baitiche (Thionville, France) and split the Redhawks defense before burying the shot into the bottom corner of the net to cur the deficit in half in the 73
rd minute.
• Daemen fired five more shots the remained of the way, but none found the back of the the Roberts Wesleyan net.
• Bustamante made nine saves, one shy of his career-high, in the loss while Eric Jewson tallied three saves for the win.
• Roberts Wesleyan held a 17-11 edge on shots and 7-4 advantage for corners.
GAME NOTES
• Roberts Wesleyan now leads the all-time series, 19-5-3.
• Bustamante entered the game ranked 18
th in the nation and the ECC leader in total saves with 33
• Four cards were issued in the match with three going to Roberts Wesleyan and one to Daemen. All four cards were issued in the final 15 minutes of the contest as well.
• Baitiche took four shots in the contest, establishing a new career-high for shots in a game.
