AMHERST, N.Y. – Despite a career-high 13 saves from senior
Arturo Bustamante (South Gate, Calif.), No. 20 Mercy University tallied three goals in the second half to cruise to a 4-0 win over Daemen University in East Coast Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Karrer Field.
The Mavericks,
who were also ranked third in the latest United Soccer Coaches East Region poll, improved to 7-2-5 and 4-0-3 in conference play while the Wildcats moved to 3-8-2 and 0-6-1 in ECC action.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Tied 0-0 in the 22
nd minute, Johannes Hanken Tjostheim of Mercy drew a penalty after getting pulled down in the box. On the ensuing penalty kick, Bustamante stuffed Tjostheim's kick before saving an ensuing shot from Hugo Martin to keep the sides level.
• Mercy broke the deadlock in the 29
th minute as Santiago Serrano drove a ball into the back of the net off an assist from Tjostheim. Julian Holland was credited with a secondary assist on the goal.
• Out of halftime, the Mavericks doubled their advantage as Herman Borke collected a loose ball off a corner kick and fired a shot past Bustamante from the top of the box.
• The Mavericks added goals in the 54
th and 74
th minute to close out the scoring for the afternoon.
• Mercy finished with a 33-5 edge on shots and 17-2 advantage in shots on goal.
• In net, Simon Steffensen made two stops for the win compared to 13 saves for Bustamante. Both goalies played the entire contest.
GAME NOTES
• Mercy remains undefeated in the all-time series, improving to 11-0.
• Sophomore
Will Mueller (Lancaster, N.Y.) made his first start of the 2024 season and second career start this afternoon. The Lancaster, N.Y., native played all 90 minutes.
• Bustamante entered the contest ranked 11th in the nation and the ECC leader for total saves with 62. He also was ranked 29th nationally for save percentage at .797. The senior has now made ten-or-more saves in consecutive contests as well.
• Along with Bustamante and Mueller,
Calvin Kron (Greece, N.Y.),
Joshua Choi (Upland, Calif.) and
Ajan Rajamohan (Spencerport, N.Y.) played the entire contest.
