Upset-Minded Wildcats Heartbroken by Defending National Champions Franklin Pierce

AMHERST, N.Y. – A goal from Julen Martin of Franklin Pierce University at the 75:01 mark dashed Daemen Universities hope for an upset as they fell to the defending NCAA Division II Men's Soccer National Champions, 1-0, on a windy Wednesday afternoon at Karrer Field.

The Ravens, members of the Northeast-10 Conference and ranked eighth nationally in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll, improved to 10-1-4 while the Wildcats moved to 3-9-2 with the loss.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Daemen withstood the Franklin Pierce attack throughout the first half with senior goalkeeper Arturo Bustamante (South Gate, Calif.) making eight saves to keep the sides scoreless.
• After a scoreless start to the second stanza, the Wildcats had best scoring opportunity of the contest in the 75th minute. Senior Emmanuel Perez (Los Angeles, Calif.) rifled a shot off a free-kick on net that was stopped by Ravens goalkeeper Jaime Colvill.
• Franklin Pierce scored the lone goal of the match less than a minute later as Martin nabbed his first goal of the season. The graduate student headed a ball off a corner kick from teammate Tiago Barriguinha into the top left corner of the net past the outstretched hand of Bustamante.
• The Ravens kept the upset-minded Wildcats at bay for the remainder of the contest to escape with a road win.
• In net, Bustamante made 12 saves, one shy of his career-high of 13 which he set less than a week prior against Mercy University (Oct. 26). As for Colvill, he earned his fourth win of the year and made two saves. Both played the entire contest as well.
• The defending national champions outshot Daemen, 26-5, and held a 14-0 advantage in corners.
