Men's Tennis Falls To Mercyhurst On Tuesday Evening

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – The Daemen University men's tennis team dropped a non-league match 7-0 to Mercyhurst University on Tuesday afternoon at the Miller Tennis Center. It marked Daemen's first loss of the spring season as the Wildcats drop to 2-5 on the year. Mercyhurst improves to 3-1 on the year.

Today's match was played under NCAA Division I/II scoring rules, and after the Lakers swept the Wildcats in doubles play, Mercyhurst picked up the first point of the match. Ben Davis and Lukas Cabue of MU defeated junior Jayven Williamson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and freshman Lucas Garcia (Bogota, Colombia), 6-0 in the first doubles pairing. The Daemen No. 3 pairing of freshman Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany) and sophomore Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) played the Lakers tough, but Mercyhurst's Mykahlio Polishcuck and Derekn Wisnes pulled away at the end to take the set and the automatic doubles point with a 7-5 victory. With both teams cheering on from the sidelines, the Wildcats and Lakers No. 1 doubles played to a tiebreak, 7-6, but sophomore Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M.) and junior Juan Alvarez (Puebla, Mexico) fell to MU's Danylo Rekun and Colm Schultz, 7-5, in the tiebreak.

Mercyhurst won all six singles matches. Alvarez battled Cabue in No. 2 singles and stayed close in the first but fell 6-4, 6-2 to the sophomore Laker. Davis outlasted Chitanand (6-2, 6-3) at third singles, while Mergens was topped (6-1, 6-2) by Polischuk in No. 5 singles. Graduate student Zachary LaPlante (Ottawa, Ont.) fell to Svia Koliadynski, 6-3, 6-5, in No. 6 singles.

Fourth and first singles each went to three sets tonight. After dropping the first set 6-2 to Schultz, Garcia put together a stellar 6-3 victory in the second set to send it to three. Schultz, the sophomore Laker, was victorious, 6-4, in the third set.

Lumanog was the final Wildcat to finish as the No. 1 singles match went to three with the sophomore battling for a 7-5 second-set victory after dropping the first, 6-4, but fell to Rekun 6-4 in the third and final set.
