Wildcats Drop Season Opener To Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Junior Rachel Black scored six goals and and senior Isabella Kelty added a goal and six assists to lead Walsh University to a 15-5 victory over Daemen University in non-conference women's lacrosse action this afternoon. It marked the 2024 season opener for both teams.

Daemen women's lacrosse is entering its second season as a varsity sport. Head coach Dominique Hamman returns 12 players and welcomes nine newcomers to the 2024 roster. The Wildcats finished 7-9 in their inaugural season last spring. Walsh is a NCAA Division II affiliate and a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Walsh returns four of the top seven scorers from last year's team that went 16-3 overall and 8-0 in G-MAC play. The Cavaliers claimed their third-straight G-MAC Tournament last year and are the preseason favorite to win the conference title this year.

Senior Dana Bacher (Hamburg, N.Y.), junior Camryn Day (Hamburg, N.Y.), sophomores Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) and Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and freshman Mikayla Myer (Geneva, N.Y.) scored for Daemen, while sophomore Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.) went the distance in goal and made nine saves.

The teams traded goals early in the game before the host Cavaliers closed out the first quarter with five unanswered goals. Walsh outscored the Wildcats 2-1 during a low scoring second quarter and the Cavaliers took an 8-2 lead into halftime.

The Walsh lead was 9-3 when the hosts got goals from Black, Jossalyn Welch and Katie Coomes to open up a 12-3 lead. Myer closed out the third quarter scoring with her first career goal. Walsh would post a 3-1 edge in goals in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Walsh finished with a 36-16 edge in total shots, while Daemen held a 12-11 edge in draw controls. Bouley paced the Wildcats with a team-high seven draw controls.

Daemen returns to action Saturday (Feb. 24) when it hosts Dominican University (N.Y.) in its home opener. The game will be played at 3 p.m. at Coyer Field on the campus of Buffalo State University.
