Women's Lacrosse Drops Home Opener To Dominican

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore Madelyn Grella scored six goals and assisted on five others to lead Dominican University to a 20-8 victory over Daemen University in non-conference women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Coyer Field on the campus of Buffalo State University. It marked the 2024 season opener for the visiting Chargers, while Daemen dropped to 0-2.

Daemen women's lacrosse is entering its second season as a varsity sport. Head coach Dominique Hamman returns 12 players and welcomes nine newcomers to the 2024 roster. The Wildcats finished 7-9 in their inaugural season last spring. Dominican is a NCAA Division II affiliate and a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). Dominican returns several key players from last year's team that went 17-2 overall and 9-1 in CACC play. The Chargers claimed their first CACC Tournament title following a 12-11 (2OT) victory over Jefferson University in the tournament championship game. The Chargers led the nation in goals per game (19.4) and ranked second in fewest goals allowed per game (6.9) last year.

Sophomore Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) led the Wildcats today with four goals. Freshman Mikayla Myer (Geneva, N.Y.) netted two goals, while fellow rookie Shannen Calandra (Rome, N.Y.) recorded two assists. Sophomore Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.) started in net for the Wildcats and made four saves. Senior Tatiana Wright (Stratford, Conn.) played the final 41:23 in net and recorded seven saves.

Dominican netted the first goal of the game, before the Wildcats got back-to-back goals by Myer and Bouley to take a 2-1 lead. The Chargers closed out the first quarter with six unanswered goals and took an 8-2 lead into the second frame. Dominican increased its lead to 11-2 following a free position goal by junior Sydney Strohmayer at 8:40 of the second quarter and the Chargers would take a 14-3 lead into halftime. Daemen came no closer that 10 goals during the second half.

Dominican finished with a 38-17 edge in total shots, while Daemen held a 16-15 edge in draw controls. Myer paced the Wildcats with a team-high five draw controls.

Daemen is idle until next Saturday (Marc. 2) when it plays the first of five-straight road games at Lock Haven University.
