Wildcats Outlast Firebirds In Double Overtime Thriller

AMHERST, N.Y. – Senior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) scored a key bucket in the second overtime and totaled 23 points to lead the Daemen University men's basketball team to a 103-98 victory in double overtime over the University of the District of Columbia this evening at the Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus.

Daemen, which entered the game ranked fourth in the East Region by the Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC), improved to 20-7 overall and 10-4 in the East Coast Conference. The Firebirds suffered their third-straight loss and dropped to 8-14 overall and 6-7 in the league. Daemen maintains its hold on third place in the ECC standings.

It marks the second time this season the Wildcats have prevailed in a game that went two overtimes. Daemen came away with a 112-109 win in double OT back on Dec. 31 at Saint Anselm College.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Daemen finished with six players in double figures.
  • Fasoyiro, the reigning ECC Player of the Week, connected on 8-of-13 shots and made 3-of-5 from downtown. He also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and registered two blocks.
  • Graduate student Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) played 42 minutes and totaled 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
  • Senior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) made 7-of-13 shots and totaled 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals.
  • Fifth-year senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) went 2-of-4 from downtown and scored 14 points, while sophomore Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.
  • Freshman Zach Philipkoski (New Hartford, N.Y.) added 10 points and five boards in just 17 minutes.
  • Five players scored in double figures for UDC. Sophomore Eric Morgan, Jr, went 10-of-20 from the field and scored a game-high 26 points, while junior Vernon Simmons added 17 points and nine rebounds.

GAME NOTES
  • Neither team led by more than seven points in the game that featured 11 ties and 12 lead changes.
  • Daemen has prevailed in the last 14 meetings between the two teams and the Wildcats own a 19-2 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Daemen has reached 20 wins for the sixth-straight season. The streak does not include the 2020-21 season, as Daemen only played 16 games during that COVID-10 shortened 2020-21 season.
  • The game was tied at 80 at the end of regulation and 89 at the end of the first overtime.
  • Daemen took the largest lead of the game, 71-64, following a layup by Philipkoski with just over seven minutes left in the second half, but UDC seized control with a 14-2 run. Simmons made one-of-two free throws with 2:01 left to cap the run and give the Firebirds a 78-73 lead.
  • Daemen answered with a corner three-pointer by MacDonald to make it a two-point game. UDC was up two (80-78) with the ball with 40 seconds left when Atkins came up with a big block and MacDonald scored with 10 seconds left to knot it at 80-80. Fasoyiro came up with a big block on a layup attempt by Morgan, Jr. in the final seconds to force overtime.
  • Daemen went up four points, 88-84, after Fasoyiro hit a triple with 46 seconds left in the second OT, but Morgan, Jr. answered with a three-pointer at the other end to make it a one-point game. Atkins then made one-of-two free throws with 18 seconds left and Morgan, Jr. hit a jumper with nine seconds left to tie it at 89-89. Atkins was off the mark with jumper in the lane at the other end just before time expired.
  • Daemen scored the first four points in the second overtime and maintained the lead the whole five minutes. A layup by Fasoyiro off a feed from Atkins with 51 seconds left gave Daemen a 99-96 lead. Hemphill came up with a big block at the other end and MacDonald scored with 31 seconds left to give Daemen a 101-96 lead. A jumper by Morgan, Jr. made it a three-point game with 18 seconds left and Philipkoski swished two free throws with 15 seconds to play. A triple by Morgan, Jr. was off the mark and  Glover collected the rebound to secure the win.
  • Daemen shot 58-percent (14-24) in the first half, but only took a 38-34 lead into halftime.
  • Daemen finished 35-of-71 (49%) from the field overall and made 7-of-21 from downtown. The hosts canned 26-of-33 free throws.
  • UDC shot 47-percent (38-of-81) from the field overall and went 9-of-25 from downtown. The visitors connected on 13-of-15 from the charity stripe.
  • The Wildcats posted a 22-11 advantage in points off turnovers and 44-36 edge points in the paint.
NEXT JUMP BALL
Daemen hosts cross-town rival D'Youville University in its final regular season home game Sunday (Feb. 25).
