Strong Start Lifts Lock Haven Past Wildcats

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Sophomore Gabby Gunnip totaled three goals and two assists and junior Emma Williams added a goal and five assists to lead Lock Haven University to a 15-8 victory over Daemen University in non-conference women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Charlotte E. Smith Field on the LHU campus. The host Bald Eagles improved to 2-0 on the year, while Daemen dropped to 0-3.

Daemen women's lacrosse is entering its second season as a varsity sport. Head coach Dominique Hamman returns 12 players and welcomes nine newcomers to the 2024 roster. The Wildcats finished 7-9 in their inaugural season last spring. Lock Haven is a NCAA Division II affiliate and a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). LHU returns the top 10 scorers from last year's team that went 6-11 overall and 4-8 in PSAC play last year. LHU was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC Western Division.

Juniors Camryn Day (Hamburg, N.Y.) and Olivia Wade (Eden, N.Y.) both netted two goals for Daemen, while sophomore Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) totaled a goal and two assists. Additional goals were scored by senior Dana Bacher (Hamburg, N.Y.) and freshmen Mikayla Myer (Geneva, N.Y.) and Shannen Calandra (Rome, N.Y.). Myer has scored a goal in each of her first three collegiate games, while Calandra netted her first career goal today. Senior Tatiana Wright (Stratford, Conn.) went the distance in goal and made 13 saves.

LHU held a 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter and would go on to take a 5-0 lead into the second frame. The Bald Eagles held a 6-0 lead when the Wildcats got on the scoreboard following an unassisted goal by Day with 11:06 left before halftime. Day's second goal of the game at the 7:35 mark made it a 7-2 game, but the hosts closed out the half with three unanswered goals and LHU took a 10-2 lead into the break.

LHU held a 13-3 lead late in the third quarter when the Wildcats got back-to-back goals by Myer and Bacher to make it a 13-5 game after three quarters. The teams traded goals early in the final quarter, before Bouley and Wade scored back-to-back goals to make it a six goal game (14-8) with five minutes to play.

LHU finished with a 33-22 edge in total shots and an 18-8 advantage in draw controls. Bacher paced the Wildcats with a team-high five draw controls.

Daemen returns to Pennsylvania on Tuesday (March 5) to take on Gannon University.
