Men's Basketball Has Its Four-Game Winning Streak Halted At Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Daemen University men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end following a 79-67 loss to the College of Staten Island this evening at Sports & Recreation Center on the CSI campus.

Daemen, which entered the game ranked fifth in the East Region by the Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC), dropped to 16-7 overall and 6-4 in the ECC. The host Dolphins improved to 14-8 overall and 8-3 in the league and maintain their hold on second place in the ECC standings.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Freshman Aaron Goldstein scored 21 of his game-high 28 points in the first half to lead the host Dolphins. The rookie connected in 6-of-9 from downtown and went 10-of-17 from the field overall. Junior Messiah Mallory added 10 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and four steals for the hosts.
  • Daemen finished with four players in double figures.
  • Senior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) went 4-of-7 from three-point land and totaled 24 points and five rebounds.
  • Senior Nick MacDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists, while graduate student Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
  • Senior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) drilled three three-pointers and finished with 11 points and five assists. Mason now stands two points shy of 1,000 for his career.

GAME NOTES
  • Staten Island, which posted a 71-62 win at Lumsden Gymnasium earlier this year, swept the season series from the Wildcats. The win at Lumsden was CSI's first ever victory over Daemen. The Wildcats now own a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Daemen, which entered the game leading the ECC in fewest points allowed per game (69.6), allowed a team to score over 70 points for the first time in five games.
  • Daemen trailed 7-6 five minutes into the game when a jumper by Mallory sparked the Dolphins on a 20-4 run. Back-to-back three-pointers by Goldstein with just over eight minutes left in the half capped the run and gave CSI a 27-10 lead.
  • The CSI lead was 23 points, 45-22, with just over two minutes left before half, but the Wildcats closed the half on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 15 points, 45-30, at the break.
  • Daemen cut the lead to single digits after Fasoyiro and MacDonald hit back-to-back three-pointers at the start of the second half, but CSI responded with a 7-2 spurt and regained a 14-point lead after sophomore JJ Chestnut hit a corner three-pointer at the 17:25 mark.
  • Daemen later made it a seven-point game, 56-49, after Atkins scored with 13:03 left, but that is as close as the Wildcats would come.
  • A triple by Goldstein midway through the second half gave CSI a 66-51 lead and the Dolphins maintained a double-digit lead until a late 9-3 run by the Wildcats made it an eight-point game, 73-65, with 2:38 left. CSI then answered with a three-pointer by junior Chris Clancy to regain a double-digit lead and secure the win.
  • Daemen shot 43-percent (23-53) from the field overall and made 9-of-22 from three-point land. The Wildcats canned just 12-of-20 from the charity stripe.
  • CSI shot 46-percent (30-of-66) from the field overall. The Dolphins made 10-of-22 from downtown and connected on 9-of-15 from the charity stripe.
  • The Wildcats committed 20 turnovers in the contest and the Dolphins posted a 22-14 edge in points off turnovers. The hosts also corralled 17 offensive rebounds, which led to an 18-13 edge in second change points. CSI also finished with a 24-3 advantage in bench points.
