Wildcats Cap Missouri Trip With Win Over William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. – Sophomore Avery Castner (Penn Yann, N.Y.) totaled two goals and three assists to lead the Daemen University women's lacrosse team to a 13-10 victory over William Jewell College this afternoon on the JWC campus. It marked the last of three games in the State of Missouri for Daemen, which improved to 1-6 on the year. The host Cardinals dropped to 1-5.

Daemen women's lacrosse is entering its second season as a varsity sport. Head coach Dominique Hamman returns 12 players and welcomes nine newcomers to the 2024 roster. The Wildcats finished 7-9 in their inaugural season last spring. JWC is a NCAA Division II affiliate and a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). JWC is in its inaugural season and was picked to finish eighth in the GLVC preseason poll.

Eight players recorded a point in the game for Daemen. Senior Dana Bacher (Hamburg, N.Y.) and freshman Cadence Baran (Lancaster, N.Y.) both netted three goals.  Sophomore Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) totaled a goal and two assists, while freshman Mikayla Meyer (Geneva, N.Y.) added two goals and one assist. Sophomore Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.) went the distance in goal and made seven saves.

Freshmen Kaylee Gross and Olivia Fornelli both netted three goals for the Cardinals, while fellow rookie Haydin Gibson made 13 saves.

Bacher scored two early goals for the Wildcats and Daemen later took a 4-1 lead after Castner scored off a feed from Bouley with 6:08 left in the first quarter. Daemen took a 4-2 lead into the second quarter and the Wildcats opened up a 6-2 lead after Myer potted two goals in the first two minutes of the second quarter. JWC scored the next two goals to cut the lead in half, but Daemen regained an 8-4 lead after Castner and Bouley netted back-to-back goals late in the second quarter. Daemen would take an 8-5 lead into halftime.

Daemen appeared to have the game in control after Bacher and Baran scored just 1:39 apart early in the fourth quarter to take a 10-5 lead, but WJC rallied and scored three unanswered goals to cut the lead back to two, 10-8. Daemen took an 11-8 lead into the final quarter.

The Cardinals scored twice in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to make it a one-goal game (11-10). The score remained that way until Bacher netted her third of the game off a feed from Myer with 3:56 left. JWC won the ensuing draw control but the Cardinals could not generate a shot on goal and Daemen would secure the win when sophomore Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) scored with 1:44 to play.

Daemen finished with a 29-21 edge in total shots and an 15-12 advantage in draw controls. Bouley paced the Wildcats with a team-high five draw controls.

Daemen returns to action Friday (March 15) when it hosts the University of Findlay. Game time is 5:30 p.m. at Coyer Field on the Buffalo State University campus.
