Oilers Edge Wildcats, 15-12

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore Tessa Chuba scored six goals and collected 10 draw controls to lead the University of Findlay to a 15-12 victory over Daemen University in non-conference women's lacrosse action this evening at Coyer Field on the campus of Buffalo State University. Findlay improved to 4-3 on the year, while Daemen dropped to 2-7.

Daemen women's lacrosse is entering its second season as a varsity sport. Head coach Dominique Hamman returns 12 players and welcomes nine newcomers to the 2024 roster. The Wildcats finished 7-9 in their inaugural season last spring. Findlay is a NCAA Division II affiliate and a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Oilers posted a 9-10 overall record (5-3 G-MAC) last year and lost to Walsh in the championship game of the G-MAC Tournament. Findlay was picked to finish second in the G-MAC preseason poll.

Seven players recorded a point in the game for Daemen. Sophomore Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) lead the way with three goals, while classmate Avery Castner (Penn Yann, N.Y.) added two goals and one assist. Senior Dana Bacher (Hamburg, N.Y.) and junior Olivia Wade (Eden, N.Y.) both chipped in two goals. Sophomore Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.) played the first half in net for the Wildcats and stopped five shots. Senior Tatiana Wright (Stratford, Conn.) played the second half and also made five saves.

Senior Madeline Shewbridge helped the Findlay cause with five goals and one assist, while graduate student Olivia Bakowski went the distance in net for the Oilers and made eight saves.

Daemen jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but Shewbridge and Chuba scored at 7:56 and 7:12 of the first quarter to tie the game at 3-3. After that neither team led by more than two goals until the Oilers took a 13-10 lead following an unassisted goal by junior Emma Murrell with 4:56 left in the fourth quarter. Findlay increased the lead to 15-10 after goals by Shewbridge and junior Olivia Alvarado, before Wade closed out the scoring with back-to-back goals in the final 1:46 of the game.

Findlay finished with a 31-28 edge in total shots and an 18-13 advantage in draw controls. Sophomore Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats with a team-high six draw controls.

Daemen returns to action Tuesday (March 19) when it hosts the Alfred University. Game time is 5 p.m. at Coyer Field.
