Wildcats Rally From Early Deficit But Fall To Golden Knights

ERIE, Pa. – Sophomore Charlie Hunter and senior Skyler Parson both scored three goals to lead Gannon University to a 15-8 victory over Daemen University in non-conference women's lacrosse action this afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium on the Gannon campus. It marked the 2024 home opener for the host Golden Knights who improved to 1-3 on the year. Daemen dropped to 0-4.

Daemen women's lacrosse is entering its second season as a varsity sport. Head coach Dominique Hamman returns 12 players and welcomes nine newcomers to the 2024 roster. The Wildcats finished 7-9 in their inaugural season last spring. Gannon is a NCAA Division II affiliate and a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Gannon returns five of the top seven scorers from last year's team that went 4-13 overall and 4-8 in PSAC play. GU was picked to finish sixth in the PSAC Western Division.

Junior Camryn Day (Hamburg, N.Y.) led the Wildcats with three goals and one assist, while freshman Cadence Baran (Lancaster, N.Y) scored two goals. Senior Tatiana Wright (Stratford, Conn.) went the distance in goal and made nine saves.

The game remained scoreless until the Golden Knights struck for four unanswered goals in the span of 4:23 midway through the first quarter. Four different players scored during the spurt and a tally by junior Caroline Steven with 7:01 left in the quarter capped the rally and gave the hosts a 4-0 lead. Daemen got on the scoreboard with just over two minutes left in the first quarter off an unassisted goal by Day and Gannon took a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.

Gannon scored twice in the first minute of the second quarter to take a 6-1 lead, and the score remained that way until the final two minutes of the frame when Daemen made it 6-2 after Baran scored her first career goal. Gannon took a 6-2 lead into halftime.

The Daemen offense came alive in the third quarter and the Wildcats struck for four goals in the span of five minutes to tie the game at 6-6. Freshman Shannen Calandra (Rome, N.Y.) began the comeback with an unassisted goal at 11:57. Sophomore Avery Castner (Penn Yan, N.Y.) made it 6-4 at 8:22 and the Wildcats made it a one-goal game after Baran scored her second of the game off a nice feed from sophomore Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) at 7:46. Daemen won the ensuing draw control and quickly tied the game at 6-6 after Day netted an unassisted goal with 6:59 left in the quarter. The score remained 6-6 until the Golden Knights regained control with three unanswered goals in the final 4:10 of the frame. A free position goal by senior Macy Hepditch just before the quarter expired gave the hosts a 9-6 lead.

Gannon held a 10-8 lead when the Golden Knights got back-to-back free position goals and then later took a 14-8 lead following an unassisted goal by Parsons with 2:54 left to play.

Gannon finished with a 32-16 edge in total shots and a 17-9 advantage in draw controls. Day paced the Wildcats with a team-high three draw controls.

Daemen begins a stretch of three games in the state of Missouri with a game at Rockhurst University Friday (March 8).
