Firebirds Outlast Wildcats In ECC Opener For Daemen

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen University men's tennis team opened East Coast Conference play with a 7-0 loss to the University of the District of Columbia this evening at Miller Tennis Center. UDC snapped a two-match losing streak and improved to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the ECC. Daemen saw its two-match winning streak come to an end and dropped to 5-8 overall.

The match was played under NCAA Division I/II scoring rules and the visiting Firebirds won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. The deciding point came at No. 2 doubles, where UDC's Oskar Karos and Mauricio Corty outlasted Daemen's team of freshman Lucas Garcia (Bogota, Columbia) and graduate student Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ontario), 7-6 (7-4).

UDC was victorious in all six singles matches, three of which were decided via tiebreaker. The Firebirds secured the win with straight set wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles.

No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles needed the tiebreaker to decide the winner. Sophomore Louka Queguiner of UDC defeated junior Juan Alvarez (Puebla, Mexico) at No. 2 singles (4-6, 7-6, 10-8). Garcia opened No. 4 singles with a 6-0 win over graduate student Juan Hernandez, but Hernandez rallied and took set two (7-6) and the tiebreaker (12-10) to win the match. Laplante also went to a tiebreaker with Corty at No. 6 singles. Corty took set one (6-3), before Laplante responded with a 6-3 win in set two. Corty took the tiebreaker 10-8 to win the match.
