Wildcats Open Conference Play With Loss To Redhawks

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Graduate student Lucy Rugaber totaled six goals and two assists and junior Emma Blumenstock added five goals and two assists to lead Roberts Wesleyan University to a 16-7 victory over Daemen University in women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Redhawks Field on the RWU campus. It marked the East Coast Conference opener for both teams. The host Redhawks improved to 4-5 on the year, while Daemen dropped to 2-8.

Daemen women's lacrosse is entering its second season as a varsity sport. Head coach Dominique Hamman returns 12 players and welcomes nine newcomers to the 2024 roster. The Wildcats finished 7-9 in their inaugural season last spring. Roberts Wesleyan returns several key players--including six 2023 all-conference selections--from last year's team that went 12-6 overall and 5-1 in ECC play.

Junior Olivia Wade (Eden, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats with a career-high four goals. Additional goals came from sophomores Kylie Miranto (North Tonawnada, N.Y.) and Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) and freshman Shannen Calandra (Rome, N.Y.). Senior transfer Tatiana Wright (Stratford, Conn.) went the distance in net for the Wildcats and equaled her season high with 13 saves.

Sophomore Ella Dossier helped the RWU cause with five assists, while junior goalkeeper Shawna Lesmerises stopped seven shots.

RWU held a 5-1 lead after the first quarter, but Daemen opened the second quarter with four unanswered goals and tied the game at 5-5 after Wade netted her third goal of the game with 8:16 left before halftime. RWU responded with four straight goals of their own and regained a four-goal lead (9-5) after Blumenstock scored with 2:20 left in the frame.

RWU took a 9-6 lead into halftime and the hosts outscored the Wildcats 4-1 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Roberts finished with a 39-16 edge in shots, while Daemen posted a 15-11 advantage in draw controls. Miranto and Bouley both posted a team-high three draw controls for Daemen.

Daemen is idle until next Saturday (March 30) when it hosts St. Thomas Aquinas College in an ECC game at Coyer Field on the Buffalo State University campus.
