Big Second Quarter Lifts Wildcats Past Spartans

Daemen Picks Up First ECC Win Of The Year

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) netted four goals and assisted on another to lead Daemen University to a 16-2 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College in women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Coyer Field on the Buffalo State University campus. Daemen has won two of its last three games and improved to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in the East Coast Conference. The visiting Spartans dropped to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Daemen women's lacrosse is entering its second season as a varsity sport. Head coach Dominique Hamman returns 12 players and welcomes nine newcomers to the 2024 roster. The Wildcats finished 7-9 in their inaugural season last spring. St. Thomas Aquinas returns nine players--including the top four scorers--from last year's team that went 2-12 overall and 1-5 in ECC play.

A total of 11 players recorded at least one point in the game for Daemen. Bouley's four goals gives her a team-high 21 on the year. Junior Olivia Wade (Eden, N.Y.) and sophomore Avery Castner (Penn Yan, N.Y.) both finished with three goals today. Castner also collected a career-high seven ground balls. Wade has now totaled 14 goals on the season, while Castner has netted 11. Freshman Cadence Baran (Lancaster, N.Y.) and senior Dana Bacher (Hamburg, N.Y.) both scored twice today, while sophomores Kylie Miranto (North Tonawnada, N.Y.) and Jenna Havert (Newark, N.Y.) registered single tallies. It marked the first career goal for the defender Havert. Senior transfer Tatiana Wright (Stratford, Conn.) played the first three quarters in net for the Wildcats and made five saves. Sophomore Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.) played the fourth quarter and stopped all four shots.

Junior Katelyn Cerrato and sophomore Arianna Tribble scored for the Spartans, while freshman Lilah Magenheimer made 17 saves for STAC.

Daemen got early goals from Wade and Bouley to take a 2-0 lead and the score remained that way until the final seconds of the quarter when Havert collected a ground ball in the Daemen defensive end and went coast-to-coast for her first career goal.

Bouley scored twice in the first 2:20 of the second quarter, before Cerrato got STAC on the board with 13:11 left before halftime. Daemen took control with eight unanswered goals after that, and the Wildcats took a 13-1 lead into intermission.

Daemen fired a program record 42 shots at the STAC net and the hosts finished with a 42-17 edge in shots for the game. Daemen also posted a 13-8 advantage in draw controls. Bouley, sophomore Kira Grzechowiak (West Seneca, N.Y.) and freshman Mikayla Myer (Geneva, N.Y.) all posted a team-high three draw controls for Daemen.

Daemen returns to action Monday (April 1) when it travels to Canton, Ohio to take on Malone University.
