The host Hawks improved to 3-0 on the year, while Daemen dropped to 0-5. Daemen women's lacrosse is entering its second season as a varsity sport. Head coach Dominique Hamman returns 12 players and welcomes nine newcomers to the 2024 roster. The Wildcats finished 7-9 in their inaugural season last spring. Rockhurst is a NCAA Division II affiliate and a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The Hawks return four of the top eight scorers from last year's team that went 10-6 overall and 4-2 in GLVC play. Rockhurst was picked to finish third in the GLVC preseason poll. The Wildcats were dealt a serious blow when junior Camryn Day (Hamburg, N.Y.) went down with an injury just 15 seconds into the game. Day entered the game with a team-high seven goals and nine points. Sophomore Kira Grzechowiak (West Seneca, N.Y.) led the Wildcats with a career-high four goals. Sophomores Ella Bouley (Auburn, N.Y.) and Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and senior Dana Bacher (Hamburg, N.Y.) all contributed two goals for Daemen. Sophomore Blair Pfohl (Lockport, N.Y.) went the distance in goal and made nine saves. Senior Catey Roux led the Hawks with five goals, while graduate student Mackenzie Blair added three goals and one assist. Bouley gave Daemen a 1-0 lead just 34 seconds into the game, and the game was tied at 2-2 four minutes into the first quarter. Grzechowiak gave the Wildcats a 3-2 lead at the 10:38 of the first quarter, and the score remained that way until Daemen took a 4-2 lead following an unassisted goal by Miranto with 2:09 left in the quarter. The teams traded goals in the final minute of the first quarter and the Wildcats took a 5-3 lead into the second quarter. The teams traded goals throughout most of the second quarter and Daemen took an 8-5 lead after Bacher scored off a feed from Bouley with just 40 seconds left in the half. The Hawks struck for two goals in the final 20 seconds of the frame and Daemen took an 8-7 lead into halftime. The Hawks carried the momentum into the third quarter, as the hosts tied the game at 8-8 just nine seconds in the third quarter and later took an 12-8 lead following an unassisted goal by Blair with 8:25 left in the quarter. RU would outscore Daemen 9-1 in the third quarter and take a 16-9 lead into the final frame. Rockhurst finished with a 39-23 edge in total shots and an 18-16 advantage in draw controls. Bouley paced the Wildcats with a team-high seven draw controls. Daemen will head to St. Joseph, Mo. to take on Missouri Western State University on Sunday afternoon.
